3 Things That Must Happen Before the Rapture: Paul’s Prophecy

In our daily meditations on groupbiblestudy.com, we focus on prophecies about Christ's Second Coming. Today, we examine the writings of the Apostle Paul. After his first letter (1 Thessalonians), which discusses the Rapture, he received a response from the Thessalonian church. This is evident as he begins the second chapter of his second letter (2 Thessalonians) with the word "Concerning." The Thessalonian believers had received messages from individuals trying to convince them that the Day of the Lord, including the Rapture—our gathering to Christ—had already happened (2 Thessalonians 2:2). Here is Paul's reply:
What Paul Taught the Thessalonians About the Day of the Lord
1Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers and sisters, 2not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us—whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter—asserting that the day of the Lord has already come. 3Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. 4He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God (2 Thessalonians 2:1-4; emphasis added).
Why the Thessalonians Feared They Missed the Rapture
The believers in Thessalonica were worried because someone told them that the persecution they were facing (2 Thessalonians 1:4) was connected to the Lord’s end-time arrival. Interestingly, Paul uses the same Greek word, thlipsis, which is translated as tribulation (Matthew 24:21, KJV) or distress (NIV), to describe the persecution the Thessalonians experienced while he was writing. He addressed this misunderstanding to reassure them that they had not missed the rapture—the moment when believers are caught up to meet the Lord in the air. Paul believed that the Day of the Lord happens right after the Church is gathered to the Lord (vs. 1-2). He calls the coming of Jesus and our gathering to Him “the day of the Lord” (2 Thessalonians 2:2).
Paul reassured them that they had not missed the Rapture by explaining that three events must occur before the Day of the Lord arrives (v. 2). Today and tomorrow, we will explore Paul’s teachings on these three necessary events that must occur before Jesus's return for His followers.
The First Sign: The Great Rebellion (Apostasia)
Paul emphasizes that the first event to occur is the Rebellion (v. 3). Some translations refer to it as the Apostasy or the Falling Away. Although the Greek uses the definite article, the English translation does not explicitly show it. This is not just any national rebellion but a global departure from faith. The Greek term "Apostasia" means “to leave, defect, or revolt,” typically indicating religious desertion or deviation from orthodox beliefs. What could trigger such a worldwide abandonment of faith in the future?
The Role of the Antichrist and the Mark of the Beast
It is possible that when the Antichrist and the False Prophet demand everyone receive a mark on their forehead or hand and worship the beast (Revelation 13:15-18), many with half-hearted faith will compromise, accept the mark, and turn away from the Lord. Those with understanding and genuine faith in Christ will refuse the mark and continue to walk with the Lord, eagerly awaiting His return. We live in a time when central banks worldwide are reducing cash payments, forcing people to buy online and switch to digital money. In this writer's view, this is part of a strategy to control global finances so that a one-world currency can be established, possibly a blockchain currency, controlled by a mark, which acts as a digital device on our person. Money transferred through our mobile phones is merely a precursor.
Once this global economy is established, those who accept the Mark will recognize the Antichrist's authority and divinity (allegiance to the Antichrist will be demanded). Christians are warned against accepting this mark—our allegiance is to the Lord: 9And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or in his hand, 10the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God (Revelation 14:9-10). The appearance of the Antichrist, called the man of lawlessness by Paul in verse 3, along with a turning away from faith in Christ—a falling away—will mark the first key event before the true believers are caught up (the Rapture). Tomorrow, let’s explore the second and third of Paul’s three key events.
Application: How to Live This Out
· Do Not Be "Easily Unsettled": Paul’s primary goal was to calm a panicked church. In a world of "viral" predictions and scary headlines, our application is to stay grounded in the Word. If a teaching causes frantic fear rather than sober watchfulness, it is likely not from the Spirit.
· Develop "Whole-Hearted" Faith Now: In the meditation, we said that those with "half-hearted faith" will be tempted to compromise their faith. How can we avoid such temptations? Application involves daily "spiritual exercise"—prayer, study, and community—so that when pressure comes, our roots are deep enough to stand firm.
· Discernment Over Digital Trends: While technology isn't inherently evil, we should be mindful of how global systems are shifting. Use this meditation as a prompt to evaluate your dependencies. Ask: "Is my ultimate security in my bank account/technology, or in the Lord?"
Let's carry on in these thoughts in our meditation tomorrow. Keith Thomas
