The Biblical Meaning of Being "Caught Up"

In our daily 3-minute meditations at groupbiblestudy.com, we focus on what the Bible says about the Second Coming of Christ. Today’s meditation is about the Rapture or being caught up in the air. Although the term "rapture" isn't found in the Bible, it describes the Church, God's people, being taken up to meet the Lord at His return. The word "rapture" comes from the Latin "rapere," meaning rapid, which is derived from the Greek "harpazō." In the King James Bible and the English Standard Version, "harpazō" is translated as "caught up" (see highlighted text below). It means: "to strip, spoil, snatch; to seize with force; to rob. It indicates an open act of confiscatory violence — to snatch or tear away, yank out, or remove quickly and aggressively." Here is the scripture passage that refers to God's people being "caught up":

The Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 4 and the Coming of the Lord

13But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 15For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18Therefore encourage one another with these words (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 ESV; emphasis added).

A time is nearing when the Lord will descend from heaven with a shout. At that moment, believers in Christ will be lifted from the earth and transformed as we come together to be with Him forever. This echoes what Paul the apostle conveyed to the Corinthians about the transformation of our nature when a heavenly trumpet sounds:

Metamorphosis: How Our Bodies Will Be Changed

…in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality (1 Corinthians 15:52-53).

What does the word “changed” mean? It refers to the moment when your true self—your spirit and character shaped by God—will be revealed. This will not be the same as the old nature inherited from Adam; as Paul explains, flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 15:50). Our new bodies will be eternal, not perishable (15:53). Not everyone will face death; some will be transformed instantly while alive. This event is called the rapture or being caught up, depending on your translation. When Christ returns, believers will be instantly transformed, changing from mortal bodies to immortal ones, as described above. Paul also addressed this renewal to the Philippian church:

...the Lord Jesus Christ, 21who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body (Philippians 3:20-21; emphasis added).

From Mortal to Immortal: The Power of Transformation

Is your desire to become like Jesus? The Greek word for "transform" is Metaschēmatizō, composed of two parts: Meta, meaning a change of place or condition, and schēma, referring to shape or outward form. It indicates a transformation or reshaping of outward appearance, including refashioning. At Jesus's return, true believers will experience a rapture and transformation. What is inside will be revealed—and it will be glorious. Below is what the prophet Daniel says about that time:

2Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. 3Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever (Daniel 12:2-3).

Live with "Radiant" Intent:

The Thought: Daniel 12 says the wise will "shine like the brightness of the heavens."

The Action: Ask yourself: "If my inner character is going to be revealed and made glorious, what does my inner character look like right now?" Spend 5 minutes in silence, asking God to align your "inner shape" with His righteousness so that you reflect His light today. Keith Thomas
