We are continuing from yesterday’s meditation on the Parable of the Ten Virgins in Matthew 25:1-13, with a focus on Jesus' prophecies about His return.
The Arrival of the Bridegroom at the Darkest Hour
The Lord explained that the Bridegroom would arrive at the darkest hour, at midnight. The five wise virgins, ready with extra oil, went into the Marriage Supper with Him as soon as He arrived. He did not come and then disappear only to reappear later; Jesus did not suggest two separate arrivals, one before darkness and one during it. When God’s people enter the banquet hall with Christ, there will be great joy. We will not accompany Him into the wedding hall to witness His marriage; instead, we are to be married to Him. This is not a wedding on earth; it is a wedding in heaven. This celebration will be far more glorious than any marriage you have ever witnessed, and I remind you again that if you are a believer in Christ, you are the bride!
True believers will eventually hear Him speak eternal marriage vows. For now, on earth, we are engaged or pledged in marriage, as Paul described to the Corinthian church in the passage below.
Understanding Our Identity as the Bride of Christ
I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him (2 Corinthians 11:2).
When the bridegroom arrives, the wedding will begin. The next time you attend a wedding on earth, see it as a symbol of the day He comes to lead you down the aisle. Those who are ready will enter the wedding banquet with Him. Tenderly, He will come to each of us who has faced many tearful moments, handkerchief in hand…
He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death, mourning or pain, for the old order of things has passed away (Revelation 21:4).
The Shut Door: Eternal Security and Preparation
There is one more thought I cannot overlook. It is that the door was shut behind them: “The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut” (Matthew 25:10). This closing of the door symbolizes that our experience of this new order of things is eternal. What God has been doing in your life has been merely preparation for eternity, and it will be wonderful to know that we are shut in with Christ (Matthew 25:10). The sobering thought above is that the door is shut upon the return of Christ. The plain teaching of this parable is that many people, symbolized by the five foolish virgins, will be unable to enter the banquet hall. The coming of Christ closes the door. The urgency of the hour is laid upon us by the Lord Jesus. There is no more horrifying thing than coming to the door and finding it closed to us.
How to Enter the Kingdom of Heaven
No one is inherently ready for the joys of heaven; no one can be truly worthy. A divine infusion of God's life into your spirit is crucial. We all need inner transformation. Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3). He also said, “You must be born again” or born from above (John 3:3). When we sincerely repent—turning from sin to follow Jesus—and accept God's gift of eternal life in Christ, our names are written in the Lamb's book of life (Revelation 21:27). Each person should ask themselves, "Am I trusting in someone else's faith (my parents, spouse, or pastor), or do I have my own 'oil,' symbolizing a genuine relationship with Christ?" Though outsiders will find it painful, for those of us through God's grace alone, it will be pure joy to be inside at the wedding feast. We will discuss this parable more tomorrow. Keith Thomas
