In our 3-minute daily meditations at groupbiblestudy.com, we are focusing on the Holy Spirit and His role as the “Paraclete,” a Greek term meaning one called alongside. Our theme today is about how the Holy Spirit releases power through the unity of His people, the Body of Christ.
Have you ever noticed how easy it is to think that your way of worshipping God is the "right" way? We often look at other denominations or traditions with a sense of suspicion or even spiritual superiority. But the Body of Christ is not a single, flat surface; it is a "multifaceted jewel" that God is shaping into a treasured possession that will reflect His glory: “And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him” (Malachi 3:17, KJV).
The Body of Christ is a Multifaceted Jewel
I have worshipped with Baptists, Pentecostals, Evangelicals, and Charismatics for over 48 years. I have seen that each part of the Body highlights different values and ministries. One group might focus on the solid foundation of the Word, while another emphasizes the vibrant gifts of the Spirit. The Lord does not prefer one reflection over another; He loves the whole church. We will all be caught up together when Christ comes for His Church (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). As I reflect on my experiences with God, traveling to 32 different countries across five continents, I have appreciated the diverse emphases within the Body of Christ, especially regarding the Holy Spirit. It is my belief that God is shaping each of us to love the Church as He sees it and to be open to learning from every facet of the jewel He holds in His hand.
The Danger of Spiritual Division and Disunity
When we foster an attitude of division—thinking our "wave" of the Spirit is the only one that matters—we actually grieve the Holy Spirit. Disunity is one of the main obstacles that prevents the Spirit from moving powerfully in our midst. Satan, the "Accuser of the Brethren," loves to turn Christians against each other over styles of expression or political views.
How to Cultivate Christian Unity in Diversity
Our call is to "keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace"(Ephesians 4:3). This doesn't mean we have to agree on everything, but it means we must value every reflection of the gem. When we are in harmony with one another, we create an environment where the Spirit can surprise us with His grace. Today, ask the Holy Spirit to help you see "the Church" through His eyes—not as a collection of competing groups, but as one Body, one Spirit, and one Hope. Keith Thomas
Reflection and Daily Breath Prayer
Is there a group of believers or a specific person you have judged? Ask the Spirit to break down that wall of bias.
Breath Prayer: Inhale: "We are one Body." Exhale: "I choose love over division."
Practical Ways to Choose Love Over Division Today
Knowing we are one Body is the first step, but practicing it requires intentional daily choices. Here are three practical ways to apply this meditation to your life this week:
Listen Before You Judge: The next time you encounter a Christian tradition, worship style, or theological viewpoint that feels foreign or "wrong" to you, pause. Instead of criticizing it, ask yourself: "What unique value or reflection of God's character is this group highlighting?"
Pray for Another Denomination: Dedicate time in your personal prayer life to pray for a church outside your own denomination. Ask God to bless their leadership, pour out His Spirit on their congregation, and use them to advance the Kingdom in your local community.
Engage in Kingdom Collaboration: Look for opportunities to serve alongside believers from different backgrounds. Whether it is a community food pantry, a local charity event, or a joint worship night, serving together shifts our focus away from minor theological differences and onto our shared mission.
