Jesus’ Prophecy: How to Recognize the Great Deception in the End Times

The Signs of the Second Coming
In our daily meditation on the Scriptures, we consider the prophecies about the period leading up to Christ's Second Coming. The disciples asked Jesus, "When will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?" (Matthew 24:3). Jesus warned that a time of great deception would come: “Watch out that you are not deceived” (Luke 21:8). Currently, we are living in that era of deception. Our enemy, Satan, has strategically placed individuals in influential roles across politics, media, religion, education, big pharma, food, and other fields. From these positions of authority, they promote anti-God philosophies like evolution, worldly values, and deceptive tactics, all aiming to lead society toward greater degradation. The enemy seeks to corrupt and control minds.
The Spiritual Battle for the Mind
Believers in Christ face a spiritual battle that will grow more intense until His return. Due to the enemy’s deceptive tactics, it’s crucial to understand Scripture clearly and not fall for manipulation through media, TV, or the Internet. While not everything on TV is harmful, we should evaluate all broadcasts with healthy skepticism. Everything should be measured by God's Word. Think independently! The Bible warns us not to accept every message at face value but to test the spirits for authenticity.
Testing the Spirits: A Biblical Mandate
Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world (1 John 4:1).
Every spirit that does not acknowledge that Jesus has come in the flesh is not from God and should be identified as the spirit of the Antichrist (1 John 4:1-3). When the disciples inquired about the sign of His imminent return, Jesus initially warned about deception and individuals who follow false religions.
21At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it. 22For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 23So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time (Mark 13:21-23; emphasis added).
The Rise of the False Messiah
The Scripture clearly indicates that a figure will emerge in the coming days, months, or years, presenting himself as a Messiah or Christ-like figure. In the passage above, Mark describes him as a master of deception, a charismatic leader capable of addressing complex global issues, possibly even resolving the Arab-Israeli conflict. Scripture also predicts that he will establish himself in God's temple, proclaim himself as God, and demand worship (2 Thessalonians 2:4). In the author's view, this act of desecration implies that a temple is still to be built in Jerusalem.
Revelation 13:8 states, "All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names are not written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb." Doesn't it make you wonder how many people will be deceived into following this leader who opposes God?
Finding Safety in the Voice of the Shepherd
The safest way to avoid deception is to know the true Messiah, Jesus Christ. With the Word and Spirit guiding us, we can easily identify falsehoods. Those who belong to the Shepherd are tuned into His voice (John 10:4). True believers will have discernment when the false Messiah emerges, and no one can snatch them away from the Father’s hand (John 10:29).
How to Live This Out
Don’t just consume media; critique it. Before watching the news or scrolling social media, pray for a "spirit of discernment." If a message contradicts the character of Christ (humility, truth, love, holiness), flag it as a deception. For one week, try to spend more time reading the Gospels than watching the news. Compare the "voice" of the world with the "voice" of the Shepherd. When you hear a new philosophy (in politics, education, or even religion), ask: "Does this acknowledge Jesus as Lord?" and "Does this align with 1 John 4:1?" If the answer is no, move forward with caution. Keith Thomas
