Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life: A Meditation on John 14

We continue exploring Christ's "I Am" statements. Using the Greek form of the Hebrew words translated as "I Am," Jesus explicitly claimed to be the one who led the Israelites out of Egypt. Although he appears in bodily form as a man, Jesus is fundamentally God.

The Honesty of Thomas: Seeking the Way

At the Last Supper, He discussed who He is and His purpose. He told them, “You know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas replied, ‘Lord, we don't know where you're going, so how can we know the way?’ (John 14:4-5). I admire people like Thomas, who weren’t afraid to be honest. He sought clarity about Jesus's words. His sincere heart wouldn’t let him imagine Jesus going anywhere without him; he needed to understand how he could follow and stay with Him.

6Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him” (John 14:6-7).

Not a Map, but a Person: Understanding "I Am"

Thomas likely didn't find the answer he was looking for. Instead of instructions or steps, the answer was a person—Christ Himself: "I am the way." This is the sixth of Jesus' seven “I Am” statements in the Gospel of John (6:35; 6:48; 6:51; 8:12; 10:7; 10:9; 10:11; 10:14; 11:25; 14:6; 15:1; 15:5). Jesus was affirming that He is the great I Am, the name given to God by Moses (Exodus 3:14). His claim to be the Truth and the Life emphasizes that He is the Way. To find guidance on how to be right with God, we must turn to Christ himself. We should come to Him and let Him fill our lives, for in Him lies all the Truth and Life of God we need. If there were another way to reach the Father, don’t you think He would have told us? Clearly, there is no alternative. Jesus declared, “No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).

Why We Prefer Rules Over a Relationship

As humans, we often prefer rules, laws, or rituals to follow—things we can do to earn a reward. It gives us a sense of achievement and control. But Jesus offers no other path besides Himself. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Even Geniuses Get Lost: A Lesson from Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein, the renowned theoretical physicist, was once traveling by train from Princeton when the conductor approached to check tickets. When he reached Einstein, the physicist searched his vest pocket but couldn't find his ticket. He then checked his trouser pockets and briefcase, but to no avail. He even looked at the seat beside him and searched again without success. The conductor said, 'Dr. Einstein, I know who you are. We all do. I'm sure you bought a ticket. Don't worry about it.' Einstein nodded appreciatively. As the conductor moved on, he turned back and saw Einstein on his hands and knees, searching under the seat for his ticket. The conductor rushed back and said, 'Dr. Einstein, don't worry; I know who you are; it's no problem. You don't need a ticket.' Einstein looked up and replied, 'Young man, I also know who I am. What I don't know is where I am going."

Do you know where you are going? Like Einstein, we might know who we are, but forget where we are going. If you feel aimless today, remind yourself that your destination is already secured in Christ. You don't need to find the route; you just need to stay close to the Guide.  Can you be honest and humble enough to seek answers from Christ? He is the only way to God. Reach out today to Him. He is as near as a cry from the heart. Keith Thomas
