How to Hear God's Voice & Walk in Kingdom Authority

In our daily Group Bible Study devotionals, we are focusing on Increasing our Faith. Our goal is to Know Who You Are in Christ, so that each of us may live by faith. Let’s jump in:

Key Scripture: "Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil." — Hebrews 2:14

What Is Kingdom Authority in Christ?

At the cross of Jesus Christ, the power of the enemy was decisively broken. While Satan was not immediately annihilated, his authority over those who belong to Jesus was destroyed. Jesus gave His Church a clear commission: "I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you" (Luke 10:19). We are the hands and feet of Jesus on earth today, empowered by the Holy Spirit to walk as He walked.

Walking in this authority requires us to hear and obey what theologians call a Rhema word—a timely, Spirit-prompted word from God that brings fresh faith into a specific circumstance.

Recognizing a Rhema Word: The Power of Spirit-Inspired Faith

Consider the remarkable account of Daniel and Nneka Ekechukwu from Nigeria. In November 2001, Daniel, an evangelical pastor, was involved in a violent car crash. He was rushed to the hospital, lost consciousness, and was pronounced dead by medical staff.

When his wife, Nneka, received the news, her heart broke. Yet in that moment of grief, Hebrews 11:35 flashed into her mind: "Women received their dead raised to life again." It was not just a historical verse on a page; it was a Spirit-inspired Rhema word dropping into her heart. Refusing to accept death as the final answer, she arranged—despite intense resistance—to bring Daniel’s body to a church gathering where evangelist Reinhard Bonnke was speaking. Nearly two days after the crash, as pastors prayed over his body, Daniel began to breathe, opened his eyes, and sat up.

Where did that level of faith come from? It arose because Nneka recognized and held fast to a Holy Spirit prompting.

How the Holy Spirit Speaks in Daily Life

Hearing God's voice does not always involve dramatic, life-or-death scenarios. In 1983, my wife, Sandy, flew to the United States to visit her parents for two weeks and returned to London's Heathrow Airport early one morning. I woke up at 2:30 A.M. to make the two-hour drive to pick her up. As I got dressed, a sudden, distinct thought dropped into my mind: "Take your passport."

It made no sense—I was not leaving the country. I dismissed it. But right as I reached for my car keys, the exact thought returned with urgency: "Take your passport." I ran upstairs, grabbed it, and drove to the airport.

When I arrived, Sandy was nowhere to be found. Two hours passed before my name was called over the loudspeaker to report to the Immigration Office. Because her paperwork was missing a stamp, Sandy needed to prove she was married to a British citizen to enter the country. Smiling, I pulled my passport out of my pocket. What could have been hours of bureaucratic delay was resolved in minutes simply because I obeyed a quiet prompt from the Spirit.

Elihu noted in Job 33:14, "For God does speak—now one way, now another—though man may not perceive it." Faith grows as we practice listening. God desires to open our spiritual eyes, giving us His perspective so we can step out and advance His kingdom.

Personal Application: How to Practice Hearing God's Voice

·       Practice Spiritual Attentiveness: Set aside 10 minutes today in complete silence without digital distractions. Ask the Holy Spirit to bring to mind any scripture, person, or action step He wants you to focus on today.

·       Act on Promptings: When you feel a sudden, noble prompt to encourage someone, pray for a stranger, or perform an act of obedience that aligns with Scripture, act on it promptly rather than overthinking it.

Prayer & Daily Meditation

Heavenly Father, thank You that Jesus has disarmed the enemy and granted Your Church real authority. Tune my heart to hear Your still, small voice today. Give me the courage to hold fast to Your promises and step out in faith whenever You prompt my heart. Amen.
