In our daily devotionals at Group Bible Study, we are continuing our topic of “Growing Our Faith in God.” Let’s get into it:
How does a person grow from a shaky, hesitant faith into an unwavering reliance on God? When we look at historical figures like George Müller—who built and maintained orphanages that cared for over 10,000 children without ever asking a single person for financial support—we might wonder whether such faith is reserved only for a select few.
While God gives specific spiritual gifts for particular tasks, faith is also a daily choice. Müller’s extraordinary faith was cultivated through small, consistent choices rooted in a crucial foundation: his worldview.
A worldview is the set of underlying assumptions, values, and images through which we process reality. If you were taught that the physical universe is the result of random chance, or that nothing exists beyond what can be measured scientifically, those assumptions shape how you interpret daily events. How you view the world directly influences how you live. To walk in strong faith, we require a paradigm shift—a fundamental realignment of how we perceive reality through the lens of God's Word.
Why Cultural Conditioning Weakens Our Faith
The Apostle Paul instructs us regarding this transformation: "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Romans 12:2).
We live in an environment where secular perspectives are continuously communicated through media, education, and culture. Scripture identifies the adversary as "the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient" (Ephesians 2:2). When a culture constantly promotes self-reliance and excludes God from its practical worldview, trusting an unseen God begins to sound unreasonable. The world conditions us to trust only what our intellect and five senses can verify.
Consider how visual perception works. If you are shown an ambiguous optical illusion, your brain interprets the image based on the data it previously received. If a few seconds of visual conditioning can dictate what your eyes see, imagine how decades of cultural messaging shape your spiritual perspective! If we do not actively saturate our minds with Scripture, we will default to the world’s patterns of thinking, making it difficult to exercise genuine faith.
George Müller’s Journey to Total Surrender
George Müller’s life changed dramatically when he aligned his worldview with Scripture. Four years after his conversion, in July 1829, Müller made a total surrender of his life to Christ. He wrote: "I gave myself fully to the Lord. Honors, pleasures, money, and my physical powers, my mental powers—all were laid down at the feet of Jesus, and I became a great lover of the Word of God. I found my all in God..."
Because Müller grounded his mind in Scripture, his worldview changed. When God led him to establish an orphanage in Bristol, England, with virtually no money to his name, Müller made a firm decision: he would never solicit funds from people or go into debt. If a need arose, he would take it directly to God in prayer.
Over his lifetime, Müller received and disbursed over 1.5 million pounds—an enormous sum at the time—entirely through prayer and trust in God's provision. There were mornings when the orphanage staff had no food to serve the children for breakfast. Müller would gather the children, give thanks for the food God was about to provide, and within minutes, a local baker or milkman would knock on the door with unexpected provisions.
Müller’s faith was not a blind leap into the dark; it was a rational response to a biblical worldview. He knew that the God who created the heavens and the earth was active, present, and faithful to His promises. As 2 Chronicles 16:9 declares: "For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him."
God has no favorites. What He worked in and through George Müller, He desires to do in our lives according to the unique callings He has placed on each of us. Keith Thomas
Daily Application: How to Renew Your Mind Today:
To renew your mind, you must identify where cultural conditioning has influenced your spiritual expectations.
Audit your inputs: Evaluate the media and influences you consume daily. Ask yourself: "Are these inputs strengthening my trust in God or reinforcing a secular worldview?"
Replace secular patterns with biblical truth: When facing a challenging circumstance, write down what the world says about the situation alongside what Scripture promises.
Commit your heart fully: Dedicate a specific area of need to God today, choosing to rely on His promises rather than relying solely on human solutions.
