How to Guard Your Heart: Biblical Purity in a Digital Age

In our daily meditations, we focus on Jesus’ teachings, particularly The Sermon on the Mount. In this message, He addresses core issues that affect us deeply. As the crowds listen, Jesus clarifies the Beatitude on purity: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God” (Matthew 5:8). There is an active demonic effort to instill images of violence, infidelity, and lust within us, because the enemy understands that true heart purity is impossible if our thoughts are corrupted. This explains why our flesh, or lower nature, is drawn to movies and video games that stir these desires. The world system is intentionally designed to appeal to our most basic instincts.

The Power of the Inner Vision Center

Nothing happens in the physical realm without first being conceived in the imagination and vision centers of the inner man, the mind. God has created us with the ability to “see” things before we construct something new. What architect hasn’t first envisioned the building with his mind’s eye before putting pen to paper? Don’t you think the Wright brothers first “saw” in their mind’s eye what their airplane would look like in flight? Just as a gardener tends to the weeds so they do not strangle the flowers or vegetables, we need to tend and cultivate our thought life. Our inner thoughts influence our actions and our behavior on earth. It could be said that our thought life shapes our very world! We are naïve if we believe that the accumulation of evil thoughts and images in our minds has no impact on our character. The more a person indulges in sinful images and thoughts, the greater the pollution of their inner man and the more their character becomes corrupted. Adultery leads to a lifetime of regret and guilt and empowers demonic spirits to influence us. Here’s how Jesus puts it in the following verses in His message:

Understanding Jesus’ Warning on Lust and Adultery

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell (Matthew 5:27-30).

Performing Spiritual Surgery: Closing the Eye-Gate

The Lord encourages us to close all the gates we open to the evil one’s attacks. If your “eyegate” has been used to plant images of lust in your imagination, cut the root of those images through repentance. Make a covenant with God not to visit the places where you fall into sin. There are three sources of temptation: our desires (the flesh), worldly influences, and demonic deception and temptation. As James warns:

Recognizing the Three Sources of Temptation

…But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death (James 1:13-15.)

Jesus' instruction to tear out your eye or cut off your hand if it causes you to sin is a deliberate exaggeration known as hyperbole—his hyperbolic figure of speech emphasizes uncompromising self-control and self-denial. Lust begins with the eyes but is then nurtured in the imagination center of the mind; our lower nature, the carnal mind, takes over and stimulates us to sin.

Practical Steps to Protecting Your Soul

Indeed, for most people, television and its programming can be used by the enemy to desensitize us and corrupt the center of our inner vision. Be sensitive to the body's responses to what is seen through the programming. For instance, if your heart begins to race when a horror program comes on, be self-aware and respond to the Holy Spirit’s warning of danger to your soul; do not allow the image to settle and take root. If you are stimulated by seeing a person of the opposite sex on television, respond to the Holy Spirit’s warning. Be careful to keep the vision center of your heart free from the programming of the evil one. Thank God for Jesus, the only One who can make us pure in His sight through His substitutionary death on the cross.

Application: How to Live This Out

1. The "Body Scan" Audit

The text mentions being sensitive to your body’s responses (racing heart, stimulation).

Action: Next time you are scrolling social media or watching a show, pause for 30 seconds. Ask: "Is my spirit calm, or am I feeling a 'pull' toward something dark or lustful?" If you feel that pull, turn the screen off immediately.

2. Radical Boundaries (Hyperbole in Action)

Jesus used the hyperbole of "cutting off the hand."

Action: Identify one specific "gate" that causes you to stumble. Is it an app? A specific time of night? A certain streaming service? Delete the app or move your phone charger to another room. This is your modern-day "spiritual surgery."

3. A Simple "Gatekeeper" Prayer

Keep this short prayer on your phone or a sticky note:

"Lord, I surrender my imagination to You today. Help me to be a faithful gatekeeper of my eyes and heart. When I am enticed, remind me that Your presence is more satisfying than any fleeting image. Amen." Keith Thomas
