Gifts of Healings: How the Holy Spirit Restores Us Today

In our three-minute meditations at groupbiblestudy.com, we focus on the Holy Spirit and the Spiritual Gifts in 1 Corinthians 12 and 14. Our theme today is The Gifts of Healings

We serve a God who is not distant from our pain. He is a Restorer who uses "human intermediaries" to bring His healing power to the broken and the sick. While God uses doctors and medicine, He also delights in performing "supernatural manifestations" that restore health apart from natural means.

What Does the Bible Say About Supernatural Healing?

In the original Greek, both "gifts" and "healings" are plural, indicating that God has numerous ways and "methods" for restoration. He might employ the laying on of hands, simple acts of obedience, or even objects like handkerchiefs—as seen in the Book of Acts:

“so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them” (Acts 19:12).

Were the handkerchiefs magical? No. It is believed that people’s expectations, desperation, and faith in God were the true factors behind the healings. In Acts 5:15-16, we see people healed by Peter’s shadow alone. Wouldn’t that have been amazing to witness? The power is never in the object or the person; it is always in the risen Christ.

Why Does God Manifest the Power Gifts of the Holy Spirit?

Why does God heal? It isn't just to remove physical pain; it is to testify to Jesus' identity and to build up the Body of Christ in love. While we must always submit to God's ultimate sovereignty and timing, we are encouraged to "eagerly desire" these gifts (1 Corinthians 14:1).

If you see someone hurting today, offer to pray, for you never know whether you may be the "vessel" through which the Spirit’s healing power can flow. If God can use handkerchiefs and aprons, can he not use each of us if we step out in faith in God? – Keith Thomas

Reflection: The Breath Prayer for Healing

Is there someone in your circle who needs a touch from God? Ask the Spirit to use you as a conduit of His mercy.

  • Inhale: "By Your stripes, we are healed." * Exhale: "Use me to restore."

How to Apply This to Your Daily Life

Stepping out in spiritual gifts can feel intimidating, but remember that the power comes from Christ, not from your own ability. Here is a simple, three-step application you can practice this week:

  1. Be Observant: Pay close attention to the people around you at work, the grocery store, or at home. Look for physical needs, expressions of pain, or mentions of sickness.

  2. Offer a Simple Prayer: You don't need a complex theological script. Simply ask, "I believe God still heals today. Can I say a quick, one-minute prayer for your health right now?"

  3. Release the Outcome: Remember that God's timing and sovereignty are His responsibility. Your job is simply to be the obedient vessel who steps out in faith.
