Finding Your God-Given Vision: Lessons from the Stars and Scripture

In our daily meditations, we continue to reflect on the life of Abraham, formerly known as Abram. Observing how God transformed Abram into the Father of the Faithful teaches us valuable lessons about hearing God’s voice and finding spiritual direction.

A Divine Interruption on the Open Sea

One of the most unforgettable sights I remember happened one night while I was working as a commercial fisherman on my father's fishing boat off the East Coast of England. It was well past midnight, and I was alone at the helm, over eight miles from shore. I activated the autopilot, turned off all the deck lights, and then stepped outside. I lay on my back on one of the unused nets, gazing up at the stars. Have you ever been away from civilization, without any lights, and looked up at a clear night sky? It's one of the most awe-inspiring sights in the world. That night, with no clouds and no artificial lights to obscure the view, I felt a guiding impression from the Lord, reminding me that He had a greater plan for my life than spending most of my waking hours alone, miles from others on my father's boat.

I'll never forget that night, and the memory of the starry sky will always stay with me. It was a moment when I became convinced that my future would be different and that God would teach me a new way of fishing. Instead of using a net, I would learn to use the Word of God. Rather than catching fish, I would learn to fish for people, echoing Jesus' call to His early disciples (Matt 4:19). I felt compelled to rely on Christ and dedicate my heart to serving in any way I could. Through my service, the Lord would train me daily.

The Abrahamic Promise: From Sight to Faith

As Abraham trained to be the Father of the Faithful, God began to birth in his heart a vision that would sustain and shape him for the rest of his life:

1After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.” 2But Abram said, “Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.” 4Then the word of the LORD came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.” 5He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” 6Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:1-6).

The Lord told him to go outside his tent and “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them” (v. 5). God gave Abram a vision or dream that he could hold in his mind, a picture that would enable him to persevere in his faith through many challenges. As we look at the nation of Israel today, we see that God fulfilled His Word not only on a physical level but also by bringing forth a spiritual people—a people of faith in God worldwide.

Claiming Your New Identity and Purpose

When he received God's vision, he was still called Abram, meaning exalted father. Soon, God changed his name to reflect the vision in his heart—Abraham, meaning Father of a Multitude. What vision do you hold in your heart? Does it influence your daily actions? Are you working to fulfill it? If you lack insight or a vision for the future, God wants to instill one in you. Life is about living for the next world, not this one. May God give you a clear picture of how He wants to use you, guiding your daily life.

How to Apply This Meditation

1. The "Lights Out" Exercise

In the story, I spoke about having to turn off the deck lights to see the stars.

Application: Identify the "artificial lights" in your lives—distractions like social media, constant busyness, or noise. Spend 15 minutes tonight in total darkness or silence specifically to ask: "Lord, what am I missing because of the noise?"

2. Rename Your Circumstances

God changed Abram’s name to Abraham (Father of a Multitude) before the kids even arrived.

Application: Can I encourage you to speak your "vision" instead of your "reality." If you feel called to lead but are currently following, you should begin praying and preparing to lead today. Action follows identity.

3. Count the Stars

Abraham was given a visual aid (the stars) to help his faith when things got hard.

Application: Can I suggest you find a "visual anchor" for your dream? If you feel called to help children, put a picture of a child on the fridge. If they feel called to write, put a pen on their nightstand. When faith wavers, look at the physical object to remember the spiritual promise. Keith Thomas
