Discovering God's Purpose for Your Life: The Secret of Your Motivational Gifts

In our daily Bible reflections, we focus on the Holy Spirit's work in believers in Christ. Today's theme is “Discovering Your Divine Design.”

I’ve long been inspired by the movie Chariots of Fire and by the story of the believer in Christ, Eric Liddell, who competed in the 1924 Paris Olympics. Best known for refusing to run on the Sabbath, he later won Olympic gold in the 400 meters.

At one point in the movie, Eric Liddell’s devout sister, Jennie, expresses concern and disapproval about his competitive running. She wants him to focus on preparing for missionary work in China (their family background) rather than pursuing athletics, which she sees as a distraction from their faith calling.

But what stays with me most is his reply to his sister: “I believe God made me for a purpose, but He also made me fast, and when I run, I feel His pleasure.” It beautifully captures the joy of discovering God’s calling and using our gifts for His purpose.

Understanding Your Divine Design

We were all made with a purpose. Many discover that the passions God has placed within them are not accidental but clear signs of the work He has lovingly prepared them to do:

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10, ESV)

Have you ever done something that made you feel completely alive, as if you were exactly where you were meant to be? You were not created to be a carbon copy of someone else. You were created as God’s unique workmanship with a specific "spiritual engine" designed to run a specific race.

What Are Your Motivational Gifts?

God has hardwired a "motivational gift" into your very being—a natural disposition that was actualized the moment you came to Christ. These are not just talents; they are the passions that drive you to build up the Church. When you operate in your gift, you don't feel drained; you feel energized by the Holy Spirit.

In Romans 12:6-8, Paul highlights seven motivations: Prophecy, Serving, Teaching, Encouragement, Giving, Leading, and Mercy. Each person has a unique role and is called to edify (build up) one another as members of God’s called-out community, the Church of the Living God.

Stop Comparing and Start Running Your Race

Like Eric Liddell, you find the greatest joy when you stop comparing your gift to others and start running in the lane God prepared for you. Today, ask the Lord to show you where you feel His pleasure—it is often the clearest sign of your purpose. — Keith Thomas

Reflection Question: What activities in your life feel "as natural as walking" and bring you joy when you help others?

Breath Prayer:

·       Inhale: "I am Your workmanship."

·       Exhale: "Help me run my race."

💡 Action Step: Tracking "His Pleasure" This Week

Application doesn't have to be complicated. Try a simple Energy Audit:

1.     Notice the Sparks: Whenever you serve, chat with a friend, or help out at church/work this week, take 10 seconds to note how you feel afterward.

2.     Ask the Question: Did that activity make you feel drained, or did it make you feel alive and "energized by the Holy Spirit"?

3.     Identify Your Lane: Look back at the seven motivational gifts listed above. If teaching a Sunday school class energized you, your motivation might be Teaching. If organizing a meal train for a sick friend made you feel alive, it might be Serving or Mercy.

Don't try to run in someone else's lane. Pay attention to where you feel God's pleasure this week—that is where your race begins.
