Discerning Ready Fields & The Coming Harvest

During our daily meditations, we've been examining some of Jesus’ parables. Yesterday, we focused on the Parable of the Sower, which mainly discusses the four types of soil that represent different responses to God's Word, as outlined in Luke 8:11-15 and Matthew 13:23. Today, we revisit the same parable, this time relating it to the long-term goal of fulfilling the Great Commission. Let’s explore it:

While the Parable of the Soils speaks directly to individual hearts, it also holds profound strategic wisdom for the broader Church. Jesus didn't just call us to analyze our personal heart conditions; He called us to go into all the world and sow gospel seeds effectively.

To be faithful laborers in God's kingdom, we must learn to discern where and when God is preparing the soil for harvest.

The Strategy of the Farmer

A wise farmer doesn't throw equal resources at every field without evaluating the condition of the ground. Missiologist C. Peter Wagner illustrated this with an apple orchard analogy:

Imagine an orchard owner with three fields. Field 1 is heavy with ripe fruit. Field 2 has only a few ripe apples. Field 3 has no ripe fruit yet. If the owner has 30 workers, where should he send them? He sends 29 workers into Field 1 to gather the immediate harvest, and 1 worker to monitor Fields 2 and 3 so he knows when those crops ripen.

In global missions and daily evangelism, different cultures, cities, and demographics experience distinct seasons of spiritual receptivity. Sometimes soil that was once rock-hard is plowed up by God through societal shifts, hardships, or national crises.

For example, in the early 1980s, Argentina was spiritually cold and resistant to the Gospel. But after the defeat in the Falklands War, national pride was shattered. In their humbling, the people turned toward God. A massive spiritual revival swept through the nation, transforming hard soil into fertile ground almost overnight.

God promises in 2 Chronicles 7:14: "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land."

Preparing for the Next Wave

Today, many nations resemble fields heavily infested with cultural weeds and distractions. Deception, bitterness, and materialism threaten to choke out spiritual life. Yet, God’s mercy often allows circumstances to shift the landscape, stripping away false security so that people recognize their deep need for Christ.

Just as the Jesus Movement of the 1960s and 70s swept through a culture experiencing massive upheaval, God is preparing fields today—particularly among the younger generation—for another spiritual awakening.

Our responsibility is twofold:

Keep sowing: Keep scattering the unadulterated, living seed of the Gospel without compromise.
Keep working the ground: Support broken, wounded people around you with love, truth, and discipleship so their hearts are ready when the Holy Spirit moves.

As Paul reminded the Corinthians, "I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow" (1 Corinthians 3:6). Let us position ourselves as ready harvesters, keeping our hearts soft and our eyes open to where God is moving right now.

Personal Application: Today's Heart Check

Head (Reflect): Do I view the difficult or challenging events in the world with fear, or as God potentially plowing hard soil for a future harvest?
Heart (Surrender): Is there any bitterness or unforgiveness toward someone in my life that is hardening my heart and stopping me from sharing Christ with them?
Hands (Act): Identify one person in your immediate sphere of influence (a neighbor, coworker, or family member) who is going through a difficult season. Reach out to them this week with a gesture of kindness or an offer to pray for them.

Daily Prayer

Lord of the Harvest, open my eyes to see the fields around me that are ripe for harvest. Remove any apathy or bitterness from my heart. Use me to sow Your Word faithfully and to minister to those whose hearts are being broken open by life’s trials. Send a fresh move of Your Spirit across our land and find me faithful to disciple those You bring into Your Kingdom. Amen.
