The Second Coming of Christ: Why Believers Won’t Be Caught Off Guard

Recognizing the Season of His Return
Recently, we've examined indications of Christ's Second Coming. Although the precise timing remains uncertain, those spiritually aware should recognize the season. The Lord expects believers to stay alert to earthly signs that signal His return. While specific dates can't be predicted, we must remain watchful for these signs. Those who follow the Antichrist's system will be deceived, aligning themselves with him, and won't be expecting Jesus. He will come suddenly, like a thief in the night. When Christ returns, those accepting the Mark of the Beast will try to escape God's wrath (Revelation 6:16). Yet, faithful believers will understand what is happening. How do I know? Because God’s Word affirms it. Let’s explore that.
1 Thessalonians 5: Living as Sons of the Light
Paul the Apostle wrote to the Thessalonian believers that those in Christ will not be surprised at Christ's coming, for believers in Christ will be very alert to the signs. Here’s what he wrote:
1Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, 2for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. 4But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. 5You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. 7For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 9For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing (1 Thessalonians 5:1-11; emphasis added).
Why the "Thief in the Night" Won't Surprise You
Just as one does not expect a thief to come in the night, destruction will unexpectedly come upon those who are sleeping or unaware—specifically, non-Christians (v. 3). However, believers will not be caught off guard by the Day of the Lord; as it approaches, they will be alert and aware of current events (v. 5). The rapture will occur immediately before the Day of the Lord (v. 1). God will pour out His wrath on those who have rejected the Gospel (1 Thessalonians 5:2 and 9). Believers are not destined to face God's wrath but will instead receive salvation (v. 9).
Spiritual Deliverance and the Promise of Salvation
The Greek word for salvation, sōtēríā, can refer to either spiritual salvation or physical deliverance. In this context, it is best translated as “deliverance,” since believers will refuse the Mark of the Beast and face persecution (Revelation 13:16-18). Those who trust in Christ will be delivered through being caught up (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, commonly called the rapture) in the midst of persecution.
Practical Application: How to Live This Out
Audit Your "Nightlife" (Metaphorically): Paul warns against being "asleep" or "drunk" (spiritually indifferent or numbed by the world). Ask yourself: What is currently dulling my spiritual senses? Whether it’s too much news, social media, or worldly anxiety, choose one thing to "shut out" this week to regain focus on Christ.
Encourage an "Alert" Friend: Verse 11 tells us to "build each other up." Reach out to a fellow believer this week. Instead of sharing a scary news headline, share a verse of hope about Christ’s return to encourage them to stay the course. Keith Thomas
