The Grand Design of the Cross: 3 Secrets to God's Plan

3 min read

In our daily meditations at Group Bible Study, we look at the events leading up to Christ's crucifixion, focusing today on The Uniquely Foretold Death and Purpose of Jesus Christ. Let’s jump in:

Scripture Reading: Acts 2:22–24; John 17:1–26

On the Day of Pentecost, standing before thousands gathered in Jerusalem, the Apostle Peter boldly declared: "This man was handed over to you by God’s set plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross" (Acts 2:23; emphasis added).

Every human being born into this world faces death, but Christ’s death was utterly unique in human history. It was not a tragic accident, a sudden turn of bad fortune, or a failure of political diplomacy. The cross was Almighty God's predetermined, sovereign plan, designed before the foundation of the world.

Secret 1: How Old Testament Prophecy Foretold Christ’s Sacrifice

To prove this grand design, God wove an extraordinary tapestry of prophecy across thousands of years of Old Testament history. More than 322 distinct Old Testament prophecies—written centuries before Jesus was born by different authors across multiple generations—specifically detail His birthplace, His lineage, His betrayal for thirty pieces of silver, His silence before His accusers, the piercing of His hands and feet, and His glorious resurrection.

History has truly been described as "His story." The cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ stand as the absolute focal point of all human history. His work on the cross was the entire reason He came to earth. If we look at Jesus merely as an inspiring moral teacher, a wise philosopher, or a revolutionary leader while overlooking the specific redemption accomplished through His sacrifice, we miss the Bible’s entire message.

Secret 2: "It Is Finished" — Fulfilling God’s Sovereign Plan at Calvary

In John 17, as Jesus prepared to finish the work assigned to Him, He looked back on His earthly ministry and prayed: "I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do" (John 17:4). The culmination of that work occurred hours later when He cried out from the cross, "It is finished!" (John 19:30). The debt of human sin was paid in full. God’s holy justice and profound mercy met at Calvary.

Secret 3: Living Out Your Divine Purpose as Salt and Light

Because Christ accomplished His mission, you and I now have a divine purpose. We are not here by accident. As believers left in the world, we are commissioned to share His life-giving Word with those who live in spiritual darkness. You do not need a formal pulpit or full-time vocational ministry to have an eternal impact. In your home, workplace, school, and neighborhood, you are called to be salt and light, testifying to the purpose and power of Christ's cross. Keith Thomas
