The Foundations of the Everlasting Covenant
In our daily meditations on the Scriptures, we are reflecting on the life of Abraham and the promises God made to him. The Lord stated that He would grant Abraham's descendants an everlasting land covenant. This land would be a possession for generations to come:
7I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. 8The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God” (Genesis 17:7-8).
The Lineage of the Promise: From Isaac to Israel
God's promises regarding the land of Canaan, or Israel, remain valid today. Although He dispersed the Jewish people for two thousand years, His covenant endures, and He is guiding the Jewish people back to the land He originally gave them. Additionally, God promised that Ishmael, Hagar’s son, would become the father of great nations. Esau, Jacob's brother, married Ishmael's daughter, which is why the Arab nations of the Middle East trace their origins to that connection (Genesis 28:9). However, God clearly states that the land promises are to be fulfilled through Isaac. Later, a family conflict arises when Ishmael mocks Isaac, leading Sarah to want Hagar and Ishmael to leave. Pay attention to God’s words in verse 12 of the passage below.
Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking, 10and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.” 11The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son. 12But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned. 13I will make the son of the slave into a nation also, because he is your offspring” (Genesis 21:9-13; emphasis added).
The Arabic people have become a great nation, with over 400 million people speaking Arabic. However, the land of Canaan was promised to the descendants of Isaac, and attempting to take it from them is to fight against God. Later, to clarify the matter, God promised the land to Abraham's grandson Jacob (whose name was changed to Israel):
9After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram, God appeared to him again and blessed him. 10God said to him, “Your name is Jacob, but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel.” So he named him Israel. 11And God said to him, “I am God Almighty; be fruitful and increase in number. A nation and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will be among your descendants. 12The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I also give to you, and I will give this land to your descendants after you” (Genesis 35:9-12).
One Covenant for All Nations: The Messiah’s Open Door
Jesus the Messiah, the King of Kings, was to be born from this line of offspring. Does this mean God has forsaken those nations where Arab people live? Of course not! They are called to become part of the Body of Christ, composed of Jews and Gentiles, Chinese, Indians, Indonesians, Spanish, and others. There is one covenant open to all—one that will completely forgive the sin of all men if they humble themselves and come to the Messiah. God has opened His door to you, no matter where you are or what you have done.
Application: How to Apply This Meditation
1. Trust in the "Long Game" of God
Abraham waited years for a son, and the Jewish people waited centuries for a return to their land.
· Application: Are you in a "waiting room" in your life? Reflect on the fact that God’s "everlasting" timeline is much longer than ours. If He kept a promise made 4,000 years ago, He is capable of keeping the promises He has made to you regarding your peace and provision.
2. Check Your Spiritual Heritage
The text emphasizes that while land was promised to a specific line, the Messiah was promised to the whole world.
· Application: Don't let your background or past actions make you feel like an "outsider." Just as God opened the door to every tribe and tongue, He has opened it for you. Spend five minutes in prayer today, specifically thanking God that your "inheritance" is found in Christ, not in your own merit.
3. Pray for the Peace of Nations
The meditation touches on the complex history of the Middle East and the descendants of Abraham (both Isaac and Ishmael).
· Application: Instead of viewing global conflicts only through a political lens, use this meditation as a prompt to pray for the "Body of Christ" within those nations. Pray for Jewish and Arab believers to find their common ground in the Messiah.
