Spiritual Warfare Tactics: Identifying the Enemy & Overcoming Evil

In our daily Group Bible Study meditations on the Holy Scriptures, we are exploring the topic of Spiritual Warfare, focusing today on Identifying the Enemy and Overcoming His Tactics. Let’s dive in:
Understanding the Invisible Battle in Christian Life
When World War I broke out, the War Ministry in London sent a coded message to a British outpost in a remote part of Africa: “War declared; arrest all enemy aliens in your district.”
A prompt reply came back: “We have arrested ten Germans, six Belgians, four Frenchmen, two Italians, three Austrians, and an American. Please advise immediately whom we are at war with!”
That story is humorous, but it highlights a dangerous reality in the Christian life: many believers are actively engaged in conflict without truly knowing who the real enemy is.
We often fight against people—our coworkers, family members, political adversaries, or even fellow church members—forgetting that a tangible, invisible realm exists around us. It is comprised of two opposing kingdoms: the Kingdom of Light and the kingdom of darkness. Whether we acknowledge it or not, an unseen war is raging for the hearts, minds, and souls of humanity.
Common Spiritual Warfare Tactics and How the Adversary Operates
To walk victoriously in God’s Kingdom, we must recognize the reality of this conflict and understand how the adversary operates. In his famous treatise The Art of War, Sun Tzu wrote:
“If you know your enemy and you know yourself, you need not fear the results of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, you will suffer a defeat for every victory gained. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
If this principle holds true for earthly combat, it is infinitely more crucial for spiritual warfare.
The Apostle Peter alerts us to the aggressive nature of our adversary:
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” — 1 Peter 5:8
Notice that Peter does not say the devil is looking for someone to annoy or simply distract; he is looking to devour. The enemy’s battle plans are tailored to target our specific human vulnerabilities. He studies our habits, observes our weaknesses, and crafts subtle strategies to derail our faith.
Did you know that you are already engaged in this battle simply by living a life of faithful obedience to Christ? Every simple act of love, every moment spent in spiritual discipline, every prayer you offer to God, and every step you take to fulfill the Great Commission is an active advancement against the kingdom of darkness. Because your obedience expands God's Kingdom, the enemy will actively try to resist you.
Spiritual Warfare Scripture: Why People Are Not the Enemy (Ephesians 6:12)
One of Satan’s slickest tactics is tricking us into turning our weapons on each other. The Apostle Paul clarifies the nature of our battle in his letter to the Ephesians:
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” — Ephesians 6:12
The Greek word translated as "struggle" in this passage is palē, which refers to hand-to-hand wrestling. It describes close, intense combat where two opponents sway back and forth, each trying to pin the other.
Spiritual warfare is rarely distant or abstract; it hits close to home. But when opposition arises through other people, we must remember: people are not the enemy.
Although the adversary often uses individuals to oppose us, Christians are called never to retaliate against flesh and blood. Your spouse is not the enemy. Your boss is not the enemy. Your neighbor is not the enemy. The real battle is taking place in the spiritual realm, and our mission is to overcome evil with good through the power and discernment of the Holy Spirit.
When we stop fighting human battles, we free ourselves to stand firm in true spiritual authority.
Heart Application: How to Overcome Evil with Good
1. Identify Your "Coded Messages." Take time today to evaluate your current conflicts. Are you treating a spiritual attack like a purely physical or emotional problem? Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal areas where you have been fighting against "flesh and blood." Write down one relationship or situation where you need to shift your focus from human frustration to spiritual prayer.
2. Practice the Power of Counter-Action. Because spiritual warfare requires overcoming evil with good, intentionally perform an act of blessing toward someone who has caused you friction or opposition this week. Pray for them by name, extend unexpected grace, or speak a kind word to break the spiritual tension in Jesus' name.
