Seeing Beyond the Surface — Unseen Realities & Divine Protection

In our daily meditations on the Holy Scriptures, today we begin to unpack the topic of Spiritual Warfare, looking today at the Unseen Realm. Let’s get into it:


The Unseen World Around Us


Growing up as a commercial fisherman off the east coast of England, I developed a profound respect for the sea. Working on my father’s dragnet boat had its physical dangers. On one occasion, our nets pulled up a massive German magnetic mine left on the seabed from World War II. It was a 12-foot-long cylinder packed with 1,500 pounds of high explosives, swinging just inches above our rocking deck. It looked brand new, perfectly preserved by the ocean mud, and fully capable of completely destroying us. Just because you cannot see a danger does not mean it cannot harm you. Electricity in a socket is invisible, yet its power is undeniable. Natural gas is odorless until an additive warns us of its presence.


In the same way, a tangible spiritual realm exists all around us. In fact, it is more substantial than our physical environment because the material world is temporary, while the spiritual world is eternal. The Scriptures consistently call us to awaken to these unseen realities. Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus continually engaged this invisible realm—breaking spiritual bondage, healing diseases, and demonstrating God’s reign. To walk effectively in God’s Kingdom, we must learn to perceive life through spiritual eyes rather than being governed strictly by what our physical senses report.


Elisha and the Chariots of Fire


A striking example of this dynamic appears in 2 Kings 6. The King of Aram was enraged because his secret military strategies against Israel kept failing. Suspecting a traitor among his ranks, his officers informed him that Elisha, God’s prophet, was revealing his secret words to the King of Israel. Furious, the Aramean king dispatched a massive force of horses and chariots by night to surround Elisha’s city.


Early the next morning, Elisha’s servant walked outside and saw a terrifying sight: a host of enemy troops encircling them. Panic-stricken, he cried out, "Oh, my lord, what shall we do?"


Elisha’s response seemed detached from reality: "Don't be afraid. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them" (2 Kings 6:16). Elisha then prayed a remarkable prayer: "O LORD, open his eyes so he may see." Suddenly, the Lord opened the young man's eyes, and he saw the surrounding hills filled with horses and chariots of fire—an angelic army guarding Elisha.


Elisha’s servant saw the problem; Elisha saw the Protector.


Ministering Angels and Kingdom Power


How often do we act like Elisha’s servant? We look at bank accounts, medical reports, family conflicts, or national chaos and conclude that the situation is hopeless. We forget that God has supernatural resources deployed on behalf of His children.


Hebrews 1:14 asks, "Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?" Furthermore, Jesus indicated in Matthew 18:10 that even children have heavenly guardians who continually behold the face of the Father. While we never pray to or worship angels, we pray directly to the Father, who dispatches His heavenly hosts to safeguard and assist us.


When you align your heart with God through prayer, you tap into an invisible realm governed by the sovereign Lord of Heaven. As citizens of God’s Kingdom, we do not fight for victory; we live and pray from the victory already secured by Jesus Christ. When panic threatens your peace this week, remember that the forces aligned with you in Christ far outweigh any earthly pressure arrayed against you. Keith Thomas


Heart Application


  1. Practice the "Second-Look" Pause: When a sudden crisis, bad news, or tense conflict arises this week, do not react immediately out of fear or frustration. Take a deep breath and pray silently: "Lord, open my eyes to see Your presence in this situation before I respond."

  2. Audit Your Prayer Life: Examine your daily prayers. Are you spending more time describing the size of your problems to God, or declaring the size of your God over your problems? Dedicate 5 minutes each day this week to praising God specifically for His unseen protection over your household.
