Seated with Christ in Heavenly Places: How to Overcome Fear & Win in Spiritual Warfare

In our daily Group Bible Study meditations on the Holy Scriptures, we are looking at the topic of Spiritual Warfare, focusing today on the reality of believers in Christ being positionally seated with Christ in Heavenly places. Let’s get into it:

Understanding Your Present Position in Christ (Ephesians 2:6)

When we look more closely in the Scriptures, we uncover spiritual riches that completely change how those who trust in Christ view our daily battles. One of the most breathtaking truths in all of God’s Word appears in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians:

"And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus." (Ephesians 2:6-7)

Notice the tense Paul uses here. He does not say God will seat us in heavenly realms when we die or when Jesus returns. He states as a present legal reality that God has raised us up and has seated us with Christ right now.

In the unseen spiritual realm, believers in Christ have shifted their position. They are no longer under the authority of the ruler of the kingdom of the air. Through their organic union with Jesus—similar to a branch attached to a vine—their connection to the Head means they share in His position. Since Christ is seated above all rule, authority, power, and dominion, believers also hold that same exalted authority in Him.

Breaking the Fear Chain in Spiritual Warfare

Why is this truth so crucial for spiritual warfare? Because the enemy’s chief strategy is to keep you operating from a posture of earthly fear rather than heavenly position.

Satan uses fear—fear of failure, fear of man, fear of sickness, and fear of death—as a spiritual chain to keep believers captive. But when you realize that you are already seated safely with Christ in heavenly places, the enemy’s intimidation tactics fall apart. What can a defeated enemy truly do to someone who is already enthroned with the resurrected King?

Displaying God’s Authority to the Unseen Realm

Ephesians 3:9-10 reveals God’s eternal plan for the Church:

"and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms..."

God is actively using redeemed, transformed believers to display His wisdom and power to the spiritual realm. Demonic forces expect you to live discouraged, timid, and overwhelmed by world circumstances. But when you step out in bold faith, knowing your legal standing in Christ, you dismantle the strongholds of the enemy and demonstrate God’s complete victory.

How Your Heavenly Position Transforms Your Prayer Life

Understanding your heavenly seating also radically transforms your prayer life. Many believers pray like beggars standing outside the gate, hoping God might hear them if they cry out loud enough. But when you know you are seated with Christ, you pray from a position of authority. You come boldly before the throne of grace, declaring God’s will and releasing His Kingdom authority into your earthbound situations.

You do not need to strive to attain this position; it is a completed fact to be believed and acted upon. Step into your true spiritual location today and let the unseen realm see who you are in Jesus. --Keith Thomas

Heart Application

  1. Perform an Identity Audit: Whenever you feel anxious or overwhelmed today, pause and ask yourself: "Am I looking at this problem from the earth up, or from my seat in heavenly places down?" Verbally realign your perspective with Ephesians 2:6.

  2. Practice "Bold Access" Prayer: Pick one difficult situation in your life or family right now. Spend 5 minutes praying over it, beginning your prayer with: "Father, I come to You not as a helpless victim, but as one seated with Christ in heavenly realms. Based on His authority, I ask for..."

  3. Dismantle a Mental Stronghold: Identify one persistent thought or worry that has been making you feel defeated. Find a scripture that speaks God’s truth over that fear, write it on a card, and speak it aloud every time that thought returns today.
