Revelation 5 Devotional: The Slain Lamb and Golden Bowls of Prayer

We are continuing our daily 3-minute meditations at Group Bible Study on the Book of Revelation. Today’s devotional focuses on Revelation chapter 5, what the apostle John witnessed in God's Throne Room, and what it reveals about our eternal victory.

Scripture Reading: Revelation 5:6-14; Romans 8:18-23

1. The Slain Lamb at the Center of God's Throne

John was told to look for a conquering Lion, but when he turned his gaze to the center of the throne, he saw an astonishing sight:

"Then I saw a Lamb who appeared to have been slain, standing in the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which represent the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth" (Revelation 5:6).

God’s victory over evil was not won by raw military violence, but through the sacrificial blood of a Lamb. The Greek text refers to a little lamb (arnion), invoking the Passover sacrifice in Exodus 12 whose blood delivered Israel from slavery. Jesus entered the domain of sin and death, took the full penalty upon Himself, and rose again.

He is not a dead victim; He is standing at the very center of divine authority, bearing the glorified scars of His crucifixion. His seven horns symbolize complete omnipotent power, while His seven eyes represent the all-seeing omniscience of the Holy Spirit.

2. Golden Bowls of Incense: The Power of the Prayers of the Saints

As the Lamb takes the seven-sealed scroll from the right hand of the Father, heaven erupts:

"When He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp, and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song: 'Worthy are You to take the scroll and open its seals, because You were slain, and by Your blood You purchased for God those from every tribe and tongue and people and nation'" (Revelation 5:8-9).

Notice what surrounds the throne at this monumental moment: golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

Not a single tearful cry, silent plea, or whispered petition uttered by God’s children has been lost or discarded. Your prayers are preserved in golden vessels before the Almighty, actively participating in the cosmic unfolding of God's redemptive plan.

3. Eternal Worship and the Purchase of Our Redemption

The worship expands outward until John hears a choir of myriads upon myriads of angels, joined by every creature in heaven, earth, and sea, singing:

"To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be praise and honor and glory and power forever and ever!" (v. 13).

Creation itself, which has groaned in the bondage of decay (Romans 8:21-22), anticipates the glorious liberty that Christ’s redemption secures. The Lamb has purchased us to be a royal kingdom of priests, and we will reign upon the earth.

A man cannot pay the price for another man (Psalm 49:7), but God, the creator of all things, could pay the penalty for man through His redeeming value as a substitutionary sacrifice. Jesus, the God-Man, purchased all who will receive His gift of salvation and come under His covenant of love.

“You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, glorify God with your body” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

Daily Application: When Your Prayers Feel Unanswered

If you have grown weary or discouraged regarding a long-standing, seemingly unanswered prayer for a loved one, a health struggle, or a family crisis, take courage today knowing your requests are preserved in heavenly bowls.

Set aside five minutes today to pray specifically for that situation with renewed confidence, thanking God that He values and stores your prayers.

Guided Prayer

Precious Lamb of God, thank You for purchasing my redemption with Your own blood and for treasuring my fragile prayers before Your throne. Grant me patient endurance as I await that glorious day when all creation bows in worship before You. Amen.
