Jesus Before Pilate: What is Truth and Why It Matters Today

In our 3-minute daily meditations at Group Bible Study, we explore the events leading up to Christ's crucifixion. Today, we look at the illegal trial before the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate. Let’s jump in:
Key Scripture:
“‘You are a king, then!’ said Pilate. Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.’ ‘What is truth?’ retorted Pilate.” — John 18:37–38a
The Illegal Trial of Jesus Before Pontius Pilate
Two years before the crucifixion of Christ, the Roman government revoked the authority of the Jewish Sanhedrin to execute capital punishment. Tiberius Caesar decreed that only the Roman governor or procurator held the legal right to execute a criminal. For this reason, early in the morning, the Jewish leadership brought Jesus to the headquarters of Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea.
Religious Hypocrisy and Political Pressure
Here we witness a striking picture of religious hypocrisy. The Jewish leaders led Jesus to Pilate’s palace, but they refused to step inside the Gentile residence. Scribal tradition dictated that entering a Gentile home rendered a Jew ceremonially unclean, preventing them from eating the Passover meal. They were meticulously cautious about ritual cleanliness, yet completely unconcerned about orchestrating the murder of an innocent man.
When Pilate came outside to ask for formal charges, the leaders offered vague accusations: “If he were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you” (John 18:30). Pilate initially attempted to dismiss the case, but the leaders pressed the matter, insisting they lacked the authority to execute Him. Behind these human motives, divine prophecy was being fulfilled. Jesus had previously declared that He would be lifted up on a cross—a Roman form of execution—rather than stoned, which was the Jewish method.
"What is Truth?": Jesus and Pilate's Private Conversation
Pilate took Jesus inside to question Him privately. Knowing that Rome recognized only one supreme king—Caesar—Pilate asked, “Are you the king of the Jews?” (John 18:33).
Jesus clarified the nature of His authority: “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place” (John 18:36). Christ’s rule does not operate through political maneuvering, worldly force, or coercion.
When Pilate pressed Him further, Jesus stated His core mission: “In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me” (John 18:37).
Pilate replied with cynical dismissiveness: “What is truth?” To a practical Roman politician, truth was malleable—something defined by power, military force, and political expediency. Pilate recognized that Jesus was innocent of treason and declared to the crowd, “I find no basis for a charge against him” (John 18:38).
Yet Pilate fell into a trap of his own making. Previous political missteps and violent crackdowns had left him in a precarious position with Rome. If another riot broke out, Caesar might remove him from office. Fearing he would lose his status, Pilate compromised what he knew was right. Even a warning dream from his wife advising him to have nothing to do with "that innocent man" could not overcome his fear of human opinion. — Keith Thomas
Daily Application: Choosing God's Truth
Pilate stood face-to-face with Truth Incarnate, yet he walked away asking, "What is truth?" Today's culture often echoes Pilate's cynicism, claiming that truth is relative, personal, or determined by popular opinion. When we treat God's Word as optional, we fall into the exact same trap as Pilate.
Your Action Step Today: Take ten minutes today to evaluate a difficult decision you are currently facing. Are you making choices based on what is popular, convenient, or self-protective—or are you grounding your decisions on the unchanging truth of God's Word? Choose the path of truth, regardless of the personal cost.
