In the World, Not of It: Jesus’ Prayer for Protection in John 17

In our daily meditations at Group Bible Study, we look at the events leading up to Christ's crucifixion, focusing today on Jesus’ prayer for the disciples before they left for the Garden of Gethsemane. His prayer centered on Protection, Truth, and Remaining Untouched by the World. Let’s jump in:

Scripture Reading: John 17:6–19

A Lesson from the North Sea: When the World Gets Inside

Imagine standing on the deck of an ocean vessel while the stern sits completely submerged in freezing water. That is precisely where I found myself as a teenager working with my father on the North Sea. We had built a brand-new, 45-foot commercial fishing boat named the Jane Marie. On one of our first outings off the coast of England, we caught an overwhelming 34 tons of fish. As a Force 8 gale blew in, massive waves crashed over our rails. Only then did we realize a catastrophic design oversight: we had forgotten to cut scuppers—drainage holes—in the hull at deck level.

With nowhere to drain, tons of seawater trapped on deck began sinking our vessel. I kicked off my heavy boots, preparing for the worst, while another boat towed us slowly to safety. Reflections on that day near Harwich harbor taught me a profound spiritual lesson: a boat is made to be in the water, but when the water gets inside the boat, disaster strikes.

What Did Jesus Pray for His Disciples in John 17?

Jesus prayed a similar principle for His followers in John 17:15–17: "My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth."

Jesus knew His disciples would remain in a hostile environment after His ascension. He did not ask the Father to rescue them out of the world immediately, because they had a vital mission to fulfill. Instead, He prayed for their spiritual protection from Satan. As believers, we are called to navigate the rough waters of this culture without letting it seep into our souls. Once the world’s corrupting values, priorities, and noise fill our inner lives, we lose our spiritual joy, peace, and power.

Overcoming Spiritual Distraction Through God’s Word

How does God keep our "vessel" afloat? Through the cleansing, sanctifying power of His Word. In John 6:63, Jesus declared, "The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life." Satan understands Scripture's power, which is why his strategy has shifted over time. Centuries ago, forces tried to physically burn Bibles or lock them in Latin. Today, the enemy’s tactic is simple distraction: filling our schedules with endless noise, work, social media, and entertainment so that we have no time left to read, meditate, and digest God's Truth.

When administrative duties threatened to overcrowd the early church in Acts 6, the apostles wisely refused to compromise their primary calling, stating: "We will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the Word" (Acts 6:4). God’s transformative blessing rests upon individuals and churches that prioritize prayer and Scripture above the busy demands of culture.

Jesus Prayed for Your Protection

Jesus prayed specifically for your protection that night on the way to Gethsemane. God exists outside of time, and in His foreknowledge, He had you in mind. His protective hand keeps you safe so that you can serve as salt and light to a searching world.

Daily Application:

Identify the "water" that is currently trying to leak into your boat—whether it is toxic media, material worry, or unwholesome speech. Set aside 15 minutes today to read John 17 slowly, asking the Holy Spirit to cleanse your thoughts and renew your heart through the truth of God’s Word.
