How to Walk by the Spirit: A 3-Step Guide to Surrendering to God

In our daily Group Bible Study meditations, we focus on the ministry of the Holy Spirit. We are learning to walk by the Spirit rather than by our feelings. Today, our theme is: Yielding our Bodies to the Spirit.

Who is Controlling the Instrument of Your Life?

Think of your life as a musical instrument. In the hands of a novice, a violin might produce only screeching noise, but in the hands of a master, it creates a masterpiece. Your hands, your feet, your eyes, and your mind are "instruments." The question is: who is playing the song of your life today? Are you yielding your members to the "music" of the world, or are you handing the instrument to the Holy Spirit?

The 3-Step Strategy to Walk by the Spirit (Romans 6)

The Apostle Paul gives us a three-step strategy for spiritual victory: Know, Consider, and Present (Romans 6:6-13). We must know our identity in Christ—that we are dead to sin and alive to God. We must consider (or count on) the fact that sin no longer has mastery over us. And finally, we must present ourselves to God.

Paul warns us not to go on presenting the members of our bodies to sin as instruments of unrighteousness. Instead, we are to present ourselves as those "alive from the dead."

Daily Christian Meditation: Yielding Your Body to God

This is a deliberate, daily decision. It means saying, "Spirit, here are my eyes; help me see people as You see them. Here is my tongue; let my words build up rather than tear down."

The battle for your life is won or lost in the mind. What you allow your thoughts to dwell on determines which "song" your body will play. When we intentionally hand our "instruments" back to God every morning, we allow the Master Musician to produce a "song of righteousness" that the world desperately needs to hear.

Reflection: The Breath Prayer

Imagine handing your hands, your eyes, and your mind to God right now.

  • Inhale: "I am Your instrument."

  • Exhale: "Play Your song through me."

How to Apply This Today

It is easy to talk about "yielding our instruments," but how do we actually do it when life gets hectic? Here is a simple morning routine to put Romans 6 into practice:

  • Step 1: The Morning Hand-Over. Before you look at your phone or check your email, sit on the edge of your bed. Physically open your hands face-up on your lap. Tell the Holy Spirit: "Today, these hands belong to You. Use them to serve, not to grab or react in anger."

  • Step 2: The Filter Check. Throughout the day, before you reply to an annoying email or speak a harsh word, pause for three seconds. Ask yourself: "Who is playing this note right now? Me, or the Spirit?" If it's you, use the breath prayer to hand the instrument back to God.

  • Step 3: Evening Reflection. Before going to sleep, think back through your day. Don't judge yourself harshly, just notice: When did your life sound like a beautiful song? When did it sound like "screeching noise"? Thank God for His grace and resolve to hand Him the instrument again tomorrow.
