How to Pray the Lord's Prayer: A Daily Meditation Guide
In our daily meditations, we continue examining Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7). Today, we turn to His instruction on prayer in Matthew 6:9–11. This prayer may be understood as a model for shaping our own prayer life. It contains five parts. To keep this meditation brief, we will consider the first two today and return tomorrow to reflect on the rest. The five parts are:
1. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.
2. Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
3. Give us today our daily bread.
4. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
5. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
Each part of this prayer provides a meaningful framework for approaching God in prayer, as reflected below:
1. Understanding "Our Father in Heaven, Hallowed Be Your Name"
Prayer begins by directing our attention upward. As we enter God’s presence, our first focus should be on the Lord Himself.
1. Picture yourself standing before a loving Father who has loved us with an everlasting love.
2. Consider that He has drawn us into a close and intimate relationship with Himself, calling us His sons and daughters. There should be a sense of wonder that He is our Abba, our Daddy.
3. Our Father is in heaven, and He has called us into this relationship with Him for eternity. The glories of heaven are ours because of Jesus’ substitutionary death on our behalf.
4. His name is to be hallowed—set apart as holy and revered. To hallow His name is to honor Him as the Creator of all things. Just as sacred places can inspire awe, so His name on our lips should be spoken with reverence. We are grieved when His name is spoken carelessly or treated as though it has no meaning.
5. This is also a fitting time to express gratitude and praise for who God is and for what He means to you. You may even wish to sing as you enter His presence:
Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name (Psalm 100:4).
2. Praying for "Your Kingdom Come, Your Will Be Done"
The second part of the prayer also directs our attention upward. It calls us to pray for the coming of God’s kingdom on earth and to seek the fulfillment of His will above our own. In this portion of prayer, we may focus on the following:
1. Pray for the advance of the Gospel in your nation and for missionary work around the world. Ask that Satan’s influence over people and nations would be broken.
2. Pray that God’s kingdom would come to those around you. Bring before Him the specific individuals He has placed on your heart, including those in need of healing or other forms of help.
3. Pray for your spouse, your children, and other members of your family.
4. Pray for your pastor and for those who provide spiritual leadership in your church or house group.
5. Pray that the kingdom of God would come to you personally—that you would be filled, guided, and governed by the Spirit of God. This involves placing yourself on the altar as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual act of worship (Romans 12:1). God uses us most fully when we surrender ourselves to Him.
6. Pray for the leaders of your nation, that they would permit the Gospel to be proclaimed freely and without hindrance.
1I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for everyone– 2for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness (1 Timothy 2:1-2).
Life Application: Putting the Model Prayer into Practice
If you struggle to turn these concepts into a practical routine, try the "Two-Minute Pause" method during your quiet time today:
· Step 1: The "Abba" Pause (1 Minute): Before you say a single request, close your eyes and sit quietly. Intentionally think of God not as a distant judge, but as a loving, perfect father. Whisper the word "Abba" or "Father" and list three things you are genuinely grateful for right now.
· Step 2: The "Thy Will" Release (1 Minute): Think of the number one thing causing you anxiety today (a work project, a family conflict, a financial stressor). Open your hands palms-up on your lap and say: "Lord, Your kingdom come in this situation, not mine. Your will be done." Physically releasing that control shifts your mind from worry to worship.
Prayer: Father, continue to teach us how to pray with effectiveness and spiritual power. Amen.
