How to Grow Your Faith in God: Anchoring Your Life in the Right Source

Today, in our daily devotionals at Group Bible Study, we start a new topic: Growing Your Faith in God. Let’s get into it:
What comes to mind when you hear the word "faith"? Assurance? Hope? Confidence? While these concepts are all connected to faith, faith that is divorced from a specific source is nothing more than wishful thinking—much like a decorative sign bought in a store that simply reads "Have Faith." Faith in faith itself yields no spiritual power. Nor is faith a psychological tool or an invisible energy used to manipulate circumstances to achieve personal dreams.
What Is True Biblical Faith?
True biblical faith must be connected to its proper source: the God who moves mountains and who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20). Jesus continually encouraged His followers to walk in this kind of faith, reminding them that the source of faith determines its power.
The writer of Hebrews captures the essence of this connection: "And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him" (Hebrews 11:6). The very fact that you are engaging with God's Word today demonstrates a desire to draw near to Him and grow in your faith. God is pleased with that step. Faith anchored in the living God honors Him, and He responds to those who seek Him, expecting to see Him work.
Why We Must Build Spiritual Roots Before Trials Hit
Understanding this foundation is essential for the days ahead. Jesus was clear with His disciples: "In this world you will have trouble" (John 16:33). Across the globe, believers experience intense trials and persecution for their allegiance to Christ. Even in societies that have historically enjoyed religious freedom, cultural pressures against Christian convictions are increasing.
Scripture cautions us that in times of testing, those without deep spiritual roots risk falling away (2 Thessalonians 2:3). Faith is like a muscle—it must be exercised and built up in ordinary times so that it holds firm when a crisis hits. Consider the parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25. The five wise virgins were prepared ahead of time with extra oil for their lamps. When darkness fell and the bridegroom arrived, they were ready. The five foolish virgins waited until the midnight hour to seek oil, only to find themselves unprepared. We must cultivate faith today, rather than waiting for adversity to force our hand.
The disciples recognized their need for this kind of spiritual grounding when they asked Jesus a simple yet profound question: "Increase our faith!" (Luke 17:5). To understand what this looks like in practice, we can look to history for real-life examples of men and women who learned to walk in extraordinary faith.
Learning Faith from History: The Story of George Müller
Consider George Müller, born in Prussia in 1805. In his youth, Müller lived an ungodly life defined by theft, deceit, and drunkenness. Though he attempted to reform his habits multiple times, he found himself powerless to break free from his destructive patterns. Everything changed on a Saturday evening in November 1825, when a friend invited him to a small Christian gathering in a private home.
During that simple meeting—composed of prayer, Bible reading, and singing—Müller witnessed a man kneel to ask for God’s blessing. That humble act made a profound impression on him. Müller later recalled that as he lay in bed that night, he experienced a deep peace he had never known before. God had begun a work of grace in his heart.
Müller’s life demonstrates that strong faith does not originate from human willpower or natural religious inclination. It begins when an individual surrenders to the living God and anchors their confidence entirely in His character and Word. Let's look at more tomorrow. Keith Thomas
Practical Steps to Apply This Meditation Today
Here are three simple, actionable ways to put this truth into practice right now:
Identify your foundation: Take inventory of the area in your life currently causing you the most anxiety. Ask yourself: "Am I trusting in my own ability to resolve this, or am I resting in God's promises?"
Surrender the outcome: Express your dependence on God aloud: "Lord, I acknowledge that You are the source of my strength. I bring this concern to You, believing that You reward those who seek You."
Build the muscle: Choose one small decision today to choose trust over worry, using it as an opportunity to exercise your faith.
