How to Be Filled with the Holy Spirit and Find True Joy

In our daily meditations, we are continuing our series from yesterday, reflecting on the Holy Spirit—who He is, what He does, and how to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Let me begin with a question:

Have you carried a burden for so long that you forgot what it feels like to be light and free? Many people live under guilt, shame, or a lack of purpose that makes life feel heavy and colorless. We try to relieve that weight through effort or distraction, but only the Holy Spirit can truly lift it and fill us with life.

Finding Peace: When the Heavy Burden Lifts

When Keith arrived at a camp meeting in Virginia—his first Christian gathering—someone asked whether he was saved, and he had no idea what that meant. He had read a few verses of Scripture, but they felt closed to him. Still, he could see that the people around him had something he lacked: joy, kindness, and deep peace. When he asked what made the difference, they told him it was the Holy Spirit living in them and shining through. They were unaware that he had not yet entrusted his life to Christ.

Looking back, Keith realizes that those around him were sincere but inexperienced in sharing the gospel. Their first prayers for him seemed to change nothing. Then he was encouraged to fast for three days and return for prayer. During those days, he heard the gospel clearly for the first time. As one man spoke about the cross of Christ with deep emotion, Keith felt his own need for God more sharply than ever. After a long search for meaning, he had become broken and desperate.

So when they offered to pray that he would be filled with the Spirit, he gladly agreed. In that time of prayer, the burden he had carried was suddenly gone. He had not even known how heavy it was until it lifted. In its place came overwhelming joy and a river of life that overflowed in praise to God.

Rivers of Living Water: The Experiential Joy of the Spirit

Keith writes: “From my innermost being flowed a river of life, filled with love for others and ecstatic joy, expressed through the gift of tongues and inexpressible words rising in praise to God. The experience lasted over an hour, and the fruit of being filled with the Spirit was an intense hunger for the Word of God, which now made complete sense to me. I couldn’t get enough of the Scriptures. I wanted to hug everyone around me and was so in love with Jesus and my new family of believers. I knew that for the rest of my life, I had to do all I could to reach as many as I could with this message of God’s kindness and grace. That still remains my life’s purpose 49 years later.”

Keith’s experience echoes the promise Jesus made during the Feast of Tabernacles. Standing among the crowds, He proclaimed: “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink... Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water” (John 7:37).

This living water is the Holy Spirit. Without Him, the soul stays dry no matter how hard we try to improve ourselves. What we need is not more striving, but the life of the Spirit filling us from within.

The Holy Spirit not only informs us; He lets us experience the love of God. He brings peace and purpose to the places in us that once felt barren. He opens the Word, so it speaks not only to our minds, but also to our hearts. If your spiritual life feels dry today, His invitation is simple: come and drink.

Daily Reflection: The Breath Prayer

What burden are you carrying today—anxiety, regret, or unrest? Picture yourself placing it into the hands of the Spirit.

  • Inhale: “My heart is thirsty.”

  • Exhale: “Fill me with Your river.”

As you carry this invitation with you today, may the Spirit meet your thirst with His life and peace. Keith Thomas

Application Thoughts

Option 1: The "Burden Audit" (Journaling Prompt)

"Application Step: Grab a piece of paper and write down the top three things weighing you down today (e.g., finances, a strained relationship, self-doubt). Next to each one, write: 'I cannot carry this alone. Holy Spirit, I hand this to You.' Physically cross out the burden as an act of surrender."

Option 2: The 3-Minute Refresh (Action Step)

"Application Step: If you feel spiritually dry today, don't try to force a long prayer session. Instead, set a timer for 3 minutes. Sit in total silence, hands open on your lap facing upward, and simply repeat the Breath Prayer from this meditation. Focus entirely on receiving, not earning."

Option 3: Share the Flow (Community Step)

"Application Step: Keith’s immediate reaction to the Holy Spirit was a desire to love others. Think of one person in your life who seems stressed or heavy-hearted right now. Send them a text message of encouragement, or offer to buy them a coffee today. Let God's river flow through you to them."
