How Does God Reveal His Vision for Your Life? Lessons from Abraham

In our daily meditations, we continue to reflect on the life of Abraham, formerly known as Abram. Observing how God transformed Abram into the Father of the Faithful teaches us valuable lessons about walking by faith and finding God’s will and divine guidance.
The Journey from Comfort to Calling
When God first spoke to Abram about stepping out to live a life of faith, He sketched the vision in broad strokes. The initial call in Ur of the Chaldeans was to rise and leave the area now known as Southeast Iraq. They traveled northwest along the Euphrates River until they reached Haran, a city in Northwest Mesopotamia. The distance to Haran was approximately 640 miles. We don’t know how long they remained there, but this was where Abram's father, Terah, died. Abram was seventy-five when God commanded him to leave Haran and travel 800 miles farther to the land He would show him. Imagine being seventy-five years old and God speaking to you to leave the comfort of Haran for Canaan. Most of us desire the comforts of home at that age.
Why God Doesn’t Show Us the Whole Map
We naturally want the details of the vision before taking the first step, but that is not how God leads. If God shows you the end at the beginning, you may not be ready for it, or it may scare you, causing you to drift aimlessly at sea instead of being propelled by faith. God gives us just enough vision to move us forward. As a commercial fisherman in my younger years, I learned that you cannot steer a boat while drifting. When it is under power and driven through the water, a small rudder can easily steer it. Begin to step out in faith and give God control of the helm, the steering mechanism of your life. Remember Psalm 119:
Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path (Psalm 119:105).
Walking by the Light of the Word
Where does the Lord shine His light? He shines the light of revelation, His Word, on our next step, at our feet. Most of us do not see the far distance, only the next step we are to place our feet on. We must trust Him for the short distance ahead.
Specific Promises for Faithful Steps
Only when Abram arrived in Canaan did God provide more specifics about the future (Genesis 12:7), telling him that He would give his descendants the land, make a great nation from his seed, bless him, and make his name great. Those who bless him and his descendants will be blessed in return, while those who curse his descendants will be cursed by God. We should be careful in our attitude toward the Jewish people, for the Lord spoke to Zechariah the prophet, saying, "…has sent me against the nations that have plundered you- for whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye" (Zechariah 2:8). We may not agree with all the policies of the government of Israel, but the people of Israel and the seed of Abraham are precious to God. His Word is eternal, and the Lord stands by it. We are called to bless those whom God is blessing, and we Gentiles are rooted in the faith of Father Abraham. “Do not consider yourself to be superior to those other branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you” (Romans 11:18).
Growing in Maturity and Faith
Those who are mature in their faith can see how God has grown their faith step by step. I bet there are things you are doing now that you never dreamed of doing in your younger years. That is true for me, and I am convinced it is true for you.
Application Thoughts
1. The "Power" Check (The Boat Analogy)
In the text, we used an analogy about a boat's rudder. Can I ask you: Are you waiting for a 'sign' while sitting still? Remember, a rudder only works when the boat is moving. What is one small, 'safe' step you can take today to give God a chance to steer you?
2. Identifying the "Haran"
Abraham had to leave the comfort of Haran.
What is your 'Haran' right now? Is it a job that no longer fits, a habit that holds you back, or a fear of the unknown? Identify one area where you are choosing comfort over the 'further 800 miles' God is calling you to travel.
3. The "Lamp" Prayer
We referenced Psalm 119:105, so instead of praying 'Lord, show me my whole life plan,' try praying 'Lord, show me where to put my feet for the next 24 hours.' Trust that the light is bright enough for the next step, even if the distance is dark."
4. Interactive Reflection
Reflection Question: Look back five years. Are you doing things today that your 'past self' would have been too scared to do? If God grew you then, why wouldn't He be able to lead you now? Keith Thomas
