Closing the Open Doors — Spiritual Hedges & Deceptive Traps

In our daily Group Bible Study meditations on the Holy Scriptures, we are looking at the topic of Spiritual Warfare, focusing on the Unseen Realm. Let’s get into it:


The Myth of Harmless Darkness


Before I surrendered my life to Jesus Christ, a close friend named Brian began experimenting with the occult. Unaware of the spiritual boundaries he was violating, Brian allowed an Ouija board into his home. What started as lighthearted curiosity quickly descended into a terrifying reality. His family began hearing strange voices and seeing spirit manifestations moving through their house. At first, these entities masqueraded as benevolent "spirit guides," reassuring the family that "white magic" was harmless.


Eventually, the deception fell away. Chaos erupted as oppressive, demonic presences openly tormented the family, filling their home with extreme dread. Desperate for help, Brian obtained the home address of a local evangelical pastor named Harry Hughes. As Brian drove to the pastor's house, audible voices spoke to him, threatening severe harm to his entire family if he proceeded.


Spurred by desperate fear, Brian ignored the threats and reached Pastor Harry. The pastor came to the home, exercised authority in the name of Jesus Christ, removed every occult object, and led the family through prayers of deep repentance and renunciation. They dedicated their household fully to Christ. Instantly, the demonic activity ceased. Brian’s family experienced complete liberation and transformation through the power of the name of Jesus Christ.


Understanding the Spiritual Hedge


Brian’s experience illustrates a critical spiritual principle: there are boundaries in the spiritual world designed for our protection, and breaking them carries serious consequences.


In Job 1:10, Satan complained to God regarding the righteous man Job: "Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has?" God places a spiritual barrier—a protective hedge—around humanity. However, engaging in occult practices, consulting horoscopes, inviting dark media into our minds, or indulging in habitual sin works to tear down that spiritual hedge.


Satan’s primary tactic is deception. In his classic work on Spiritual Warfare, The Screwtape Letters, C.S. Lewis astutely noted:


"There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They are equally pleased by both errors."


The enemy delights either in total skepticism or unhealthy obsession. He often disguises his operations under the guise of entertainment, modern humor, or self-empowerment. But any power offered apart from the Holy Spirit always comes with a hidden hook designed to entangle people in fear and spiritual bondage.


Walking in Genuine Kingdom Liberty


In contrast to the enemy's enslavement, Jesus offers absolute freedom. Scripture declares in 2 Corinthians 3:17, "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." God never uses manipulation, terror, or deceit to bring us into His Kingdom. When God empowers His people, it produces joy, righteousness, freedom, and lasting peace.


As believers seeking the expansion of God's Kingdom, we must maintain spiritual vigilance. We cannot expect to experience the fullness of God's peace if we simultaneously leave "doors" open to enemy influence in our daily habits, entertainment, or home environment.


If you have allowed questionable practices, ungodly media, or unrepentant attitudes to compromise your spiritual defense, take heart: the authority of Jesus Christ is available to you right now. Through repentance and faith, you can close those spiritual doors, re-establish your protective hedge, and walk in total freedom. Keith Thomas


Heart Application

  1. Conduct an Atmosphere Audit: Walk through your home, digital media choices, and personal habits this week. Ask the Holy Spirit to highlight any object, media consumption, or hidden habit that displeases Him or weakens your spiritual hedge. Renounce it and remove it immediately.

  2. Declare Kingdom Ownership: Write out Colossians 1:13 ("For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves") on a card. Read it aloud over your family and home every morning this week as a conscious dedication of your life to Christ.
