A Mind Protected by the Helmet of Salvation

Building on our meditation yesterday, the fifth piece of armor Paul mentions is the Roman helmet. He describes it as a helmet of salvation. Perhaps Paul's thought was that the enemy targets the mind during spiritual warfare. His attacks on the mind vary from person to person, but for a young, immature believer, the enemy will sow thoughts that dismiss the very existence of God. Doubts rush through the air just like a sword strikes the head. At such times, you need a helmet provided by the heavenly quartermaster. We need the assurance found in the Scriptures, God's promises, and the inner witness of salvation by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit’s confirmation of salvation shields our minds like a helmet protects the head: “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children” (Romans 8:16). We can face every demonic attack knowing nothing can separate us from God's love. No matter what trials life brings, we know we are more than conquerors through Him who loves us. Paul writes:
38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38-39; emphasis added).
When we know deep down that nothing can separate us from God's love—neither demonic powers nor dark angels—our minds and spirits are firmly rooted in the Lord. The most vital battleground is the mind, so disciples of Christ should be alert to the thoughts that enter their minds. Any thought that contradicts the Word of God should be cast down and eradicated. Don’t allow the enemy to sow seeds of doubt in your mind continually. To shield and guard our minds, we must immerse ourselves in God's Word and remember that our salvation is complete and not dependent on our feelings. Paul the apostle warned the church of Corinth not to be led astray by Satan's clever attacks on the mind:
But I am afraid that just as the serpent's cunning deceived Eve, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ (2 Corinthians 11:3).
The enemy will try to persuade you that you’re standing before God depends on your actions, but our standing before God is a completed work that God has done for us. We are accepted not because of our deeds but because of what Jesus did for us on the cross.
If today you are overwhelmed with oppressive thoughts, sincerely call on the Lord to come and help you. When evil, destructive thoughts arise, visualize yourself grabbing hold of them, throwing them down, and stamping on them. “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).
Prayer: Father, come again to Your people who are reading these words today. Protect them from the evil one, grant them awareness of his attacks, and help each of us stand firm in Your mighty power. Amen. Keith Thomas
