In our daily 3-minute meditations at Group Bible Study, we explore Christ's death and what happened afterward. Let’s get into it:

As Friday afternoon turned toward dusk, God prompted two influential men to step out of hiding and give Jesus an honorable burial. Here’s what the Apostle John records:

"Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs. At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there" (John 19:38–42).

The religious leaders asked Pilate to hasten the executions so the bodies would not remain on the cross during the Sabbath, which began at sunset, in accordance with Deuteronomy 21:23. Yet, while carefully observing minor legal details, they had committed the greatest sin in human history: rejecting and murdering the Son of God.

Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus: Stepping Out of the Shadows

In contrast, Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus—both prominent members of the Sanhedrin council—risk their reputations and safety to honor Christ. Once secret believers out of fear of persecution, they boldly petitioned Pilate for the body.

Nicodemus brought seventy-five pounds (100 Roman litrai) of perfumed myrrh and aloes. Myrrh was a fragrant, sticky resin that, when mixed with aloe powder and sandalwood, hardened between linen wrappings to form a solid, cocoon-like covering around the body. This lavish amount of spices was reserved for royal burials—a fitting honor for Jesus, the King of Kings.

Prophecy Fulfilled: The Rich Man’s Tomb (Isaiah 53:9)

This burial fulfilled Isaiah 53:9, written seven centuries earlier:

"He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth."

Although the authorities intended to throw Jesus into a mass grave for criminals, God prepared a wealthy man's private tomb for Him.

Joseph placed Jesus in his own newly carved rock tomb and rolled a heavy, stone door—weighing over a ton—across the entrance. Fearful that the disciples might steal the body, the religious leaders persuaded Pilate to post a squad of Roman guards and place an official Roman seal on the stone.

The Mystery of the Intact Grave Clothes

Early Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene visited the tomb and discovered the stone rolled away. She ran to tell Peter and John.

“So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. Finally the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed” (John 20:3–8; emphasis added).

What did John see inside the tomb that instantly convinced him Jesus had risen?

He did not find unwrapped, discarded bandages left behind by body thieves. Instead, he saw the linen wrappings lying intact, still shaped like a cocoon, but entirely empty. The physical body of Jesus had passed directly through the hardened wrappings, leaving the empty shell undisturbed.

When Mary Magdalene later looked inside, she saw two angels seated where Jesus' body had lain—one at the head and one at the foot. This mirrored the Holy of Holies, where two golden cherubim stood over the Mercy Seat. Jesus' tomb became the ultimate site of divine mercy. — Keith Thomas

Today’s Application: Moving from Secret Faith to Bold Action

Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus decided to stop hiding their faith when the stakes were highest. Standing up for Jesus required courage, but they chose to step into the light regardless of the personal cost.

Are there places in your daily routine—at work, in your family, or among friends—where you have kept your commitment to Christ quiet? Choose one practical way this week to speak up for your faith or demonstrate Christ's love publicly.

Reflection & Prayer

Father, give me the courage of Joseph and Nicodemus to stand up openly for my faith. Thank You for the undeniable evidence of the empty tomb and the victory of Christ over death. Strengthen my heart to live boldly for You today. Amen.
