In our 3-minute daily meditations at Group Bible Study, we explore Christ's death and what happened after.
Medical Evidence and Proof of Jesus' Death on the Cross
In God’s foreknowledge, He knew that future skeptics would claim Jesus never truly died on the cross, but merely fainted and revived later. To refute these doubts before they could take root, God permitted a Roman soldier to pierce Jesus’ side with a spear. John testified that from the wound flowed a sudden mixture of blood and water—a detail serving as crucial medical evidence that death had occurred.
Crucifixion produced death primarily through hypovolemic shock (extreme blood volume loss) and exhaustion asphyxia. The brutal beatings and scourging Christ endured prior to the cross caused severe blood loss, leaving Him physically collapsed and unable to carry His cross. In hypovolemic shock, blood pressure plummets and fluid accumulates inside the pericardium—the sac surrounding the heart—as well as around the lungs.
When the soldier's spear pierced Christ’s side, the sudden flow of separated serum and clotted blood provided physical proof of cardiac rupture and death. There is also profound spiritual imagery here: just as the Lord created Eve from the side of the first man, Adam (Genesis 2:22), the Bride of Christ—the Church—was symbolically birthed from the wounded side of the Last Adam, Jesus.
Miraculous Signs at the Moment of Christ's Death
At the exact moment Jesus yielded His spirit, cosmic signs shook the surrounding region:
"And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people. When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, 'Surely he was the Son of God!'" — Matthew 27:50–54
The Roman soldiers guarding the cross were hardened executioners, yet they were terrified by the midday to 3 PM darkness, the severe earthquake, and the splitting of the surrounding bedrock. Jerusalem was built on rocky terrain where tombs were routinely carved directly into rock faces. The splitting of the rocks tore open these tombs, and after Christ’s resurrection, many holy men and women were raised to life—a miraculous sign pointing to Christ as "the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep" (1 Corinthians 15:20).
The Spiritual Meaning of the Torn Temple Veil
Simultaneously, an unprecedented event occurred inside the Jerusalem temple. The temple interior contained two main rooms: the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place (Holy of Holies). Separating the two was a massive curtain—thirty feet wide, thirty feet high, and as thick as a man's hand. Behind this veil sat the Ark of the Covenant, covered by the gold Mercy Seat where God's visible Shekinah glory rested.
Once a year, on the Day of Atonement, the High Priest passed beyond this veil with a pan of incense and sacrificial blood to sprinkle on the Mercy Seat. He entered with extreme reverence; a rope was tied around his ankle and bells hung from his hem so other priests could hear him moving, ensuring he was not struck dead for entering unworthily.
How the Open Door Restores Direct Access to God
When Jesus died, God tore this massive curtain in two from top to bottom. Tearing it from the top demonstrated that it was an act of God, not man. The barrier separating humanity from God's holy presence was permanently shattered. Access to God was no longer restricted to one High Priest once a year; through Jesus' finished work of redemption, every person can enter God's presence directly. It is no wonder that Acts 6:7 records that shortly afterward, "a large number of priests became obedient to the faith."
Today’s Application
The torn veil means that your access to God is direct, immediate, and uninterrupted. You do not need an earthly mediator, an elaborate ritual, or a flawless personal record to draw near to your Heavenly Father.
Is guilt, fear, or a sense of inadequacy keeping you from prayer today? Take full advantage of the open door. Set aside ten quiet minutes right now to come directly before God in prayer. Speak to Him with complete honesty about your heart, knowing that the doorway to His mercy is wide open.
Reflection & Prayer
Lord God, thank You for tearing the temple curtain and inviting me into Your presence. Forgive me for the times I hesitate to draw near to You. Thank You that through the shed blood of Jesus, I can come boldly to Your throne of grace today. Amen.
