At groupbiblestudy.com, we have been reflecting on revival. True, Spirit-led revival always begins with repentance. John the Baptist prepared the way for Christ by calling people to a decisive turning from sin, clearing their hearts for the Messiah.
While our minds are easily influenced by the world, Jesus warned that spiritual defilement ultimately comes from within our own hearts (Matthew 15:18-20). John’s call to repentance offended the religious leaders of his day because they did not see their need to change. We face the same danger today if religious pride replaces humble surrender. Genuine repentance must always produce visible change.
“Therefore bear fruits in keeping with repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father,’ for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham. Indeed the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; so every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire' (Luke 3:8-9).
What is true repentance? It is sincere sorrow for sin joined with an active decision to turn away from it. When we receive new life in Christ, our desires change. Why remain bound by sin when Christ has set us free?
What Does "The Ax at the Root" Mean?
What did John the Baptist mean by the phrase "the ax is already laid at the root of the trees"? (Luke 3:9).
John paints a vivid picture of a woodcutter placing his ax blade directly against the root, ready to strike. We can understand this image in two ways:
· A Warning of Judgment: It represents a refusal to repent. Without turning back to God, the tree is cut down as worthless.
· The Work of the Messiah: The ax symbolizes Jesus. Through our faith, He cuts away the very root of our sin problem—our fallen nature.
As Paul explains in Romans 6:6, "our old self was crucified with Him so that we would no longer be slaves to sin." When we are born again, we receive the power to overcome temptation. Repentance means severing ties to our old habits and relying on God's strength rather than our own.
Revival Starts with Me
We often pray for God to change the world around us, but spiritual renewal has a personal chain reaction:
· For a country to be revived, a state must be revived.
· For a state to be revived, a city must be revived.
· For a city to be revived, a church must be revived.
· For my church to be revived, I must be revived.
Repentance involves choosing to change. In any role—be it spouse, parent, neighbor, or employee—we are called to embody our beliefs, not merely talk about them. Genuine repentance may start with feeling sorrow, but it should inevitably result in firm action.
5 Areas to Examine
To experience true freedom, ask the Holy Spirit to help you identify and sever the roots of your old nature:
1. Past Mental Images: Ask the Holy Spirit to cleanse your mind of memories that tempt you to slide back into old habits.
2. Media and Entertainment: Ask whether the shows, music, or internet accounts you consume feed anxiety, lust, or spiritual coldness.
3. Unhealthy Emotional Ties: Ask the Lord to reveal any relationships or attachments that pull you away from Him.
4. Occult or New Age Practices: Renounce and throw away any past involvement with horoscopes, séances, or related materials.
5. Cultural Compromise: Notice where worldly ideas have shaped your thinking more than Scripture and realign your choices with God’s Word.
We were bought at a high price (1 Corinthians 6:19). Let us honestly examine how we spend our time and resources and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal anything that grieves Him (Ephesians 4:30).
Practical Application: A 3-Step Heart Audit
True repentance is not about trying harder in your own strength; it is about cooperating with the Holy Spirit. Try this simple audit this week:
· 1. The Quiet Audit: Spend 10 minutes in silence. Ask the Holy Spirit: "Is there a root in my life right now feeding an old habit?" Write down what comes to mind.
· 2. The Clean Sweep: Take one physical action today to sever that root. Delete the app, throw away the object, or set a firm boundary.
· 3. Replace the Root: Fill the empty space with something pure. Replace a worldly habit with Scripture reading, prayer, or serving someone in need.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, thank you for your presence and power. Please open my eyes to see new ways you want to show Jesus to the world through my life. Amen.
