The Spindletop Lesson: Tapping into Your Spiritual Riches

In 1900, Patillo Higgins—a one-armed mechanic and self-taught geologist—believed industry would soon shift from coal to oil. He was convinced that a vast oil reserve lay beneath Spindletop, near Houston, Texas, and that drilling into the area’s salt dome would release an extraordinary supply.

To pursue the idea, Higgins enlisted Captain Anthony F. Lucas, an experienced engineer. Though most people doubted that a salt dome could produce oil, Lucas chose the drilling site, and work began on October 27, 1900. After two difficult months, the crew reached 880 feet without success and stopped for Christmas break.

When drilling resumed, their persistence produced a historic breakthrough. Mud began bubbling from the hole; moments later, the drill pipe blasted out of the ground, followed by an eerie silence. Then, with a sound like a cannon shot, mud erupted skyward, and a gusher of oil rose 150 feet into the air.

Lucas had hoped the well might yield five barrels a day. Instead, it produced 100,000 barrels daily—more than all other U.S. oil wells combined at the time. For centuries, great wealth had rested beneath the feet of local residents, yet manylived in poverty simply because they did not know it was there.

What is the Believer’s Position in Christ?

That hidden reservoir beneath Spindletop offers a vivid picture of the believer’s life in Christ. Just as priceless oil lay undiscovered beneath the feet of those who lived nearby, many Christians live unaware of the immense authority and spiritual riches already secured for them through Jesus. The enemy works to keep believers ignorant of their New Covenant position, because he knows that once they understand who they are in Christ, they can stand firm in spiritual warfare and advance God’s Kingdom with confidence.

Why Religious Formulas Fail: The Sons of Sceva (Acts 19)

Acts 19:11-16 gives a sobering example of what happens when people try to use spiritual authority without truly possessing it:

"God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them. Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, 'In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.' Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. One day the evil spirit answered them, 'Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?' Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding."

The sons of Sceva treated the name of Jesus like a formula, assuming that religious language alone could command demonic powers. But spiritual authority is not activated by borrowed words or external rituals; it flows from a livingrelationship with Jesus Christ.

Evil spirits recognize genuine divine authority, just as they did when Jesus encountered them in the Gospels. They also recognize when that authority is missing. The sons of Sceva were exposed because they had no regenerating union with Christ—the very source of true spiritual authority.

Relationship vs. Ritual: How True Authority in Christ Works

Spiritual authority is not about what you know; it is about Who you know. True authority is given when you are born again, and Christ comes to live within you. You do not need louder words or emotional striving to exercise it; you need active faith in what Jesus finished at the cross. Heart Application: 3 Ways to Walk in Spiritual Authority Today

1. Conduct an Authority Audit: Ask yourself honestly: “Am I depending on spiritual language and religious habits, or am I walking in a living, daily relationship with Jesus?” Identify one area where you feel spiritually weak or defeated, then surrender it intentionally to His Lordship today.

2. Recognize Your Spiritual Riches: Choose one area where you feel “spiritually poor,” such as peace, courage, or self-control. Find two Scriptures that reveal God’s provision in that area, then speak them aloud in faith over your situation.

3. Practice Presence Over Performance: Set aside 10 quiet minutes today simply to abide in Christ’s presence. Instead of striving or asking, rest in your union with Him as the Vine (John 15:5), remembering that spiritual power flows from remaining connected to Him.
