Luke 8:22-39

The Sea of Galilee sits over six hundred feet below sea level, a geographical bowl famous for its sudden, violent squalls. Decades ago, back in 1978, I had the privilege of working with local fishermen on a diesel-powered boat one evening on those very waters. As a former fisherman from the east coast of England, I found the experience deeply familiar yet entirely foreign. We drank thick Turkish coffee through the night, swapping stories and comparing methods. Even with their modern electronic fish-finders, our nets came up nearly empty. The surface was a glass mirror that night, but the veterans on board shook their heads, warning me how quickly these waters can turn deadly.

 

In Luke’s Gospel, we find an evening where even seasoned, lifelong fishermen were completely terrified:

 

²² One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. ²³ As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. ²⁴ The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. ²⁵  "Where is your faith?" he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, "Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him" (Luke 8:22-25).

 

1. The Raging Sea: When Faith Drowns in Fear

 

Scripture drops a subtle hint that this was no ordinary weather event. In the economy of God's Word, Satan is termed the "prince of the power of the air" (Ephesians 2:2) and the "prince of this world" (John 12:31). We see in the opening chapters of Job that when God granted bounded permission, the enemy manipulated the elements—bringing fire from heaven and a fierce, destructive wind that struck the house of Job’s children (Job 1:12-19). While we cannot be dogmatic about the exact meteorology of Luke 8, we must never underestimate our adversary. He has power—but the Holy Spirit resting within you holds infinitely greater authority (1 John 4:4).

 

The Authority of His Word: Rebuking the Storm

 

The smoking gun of demonic influence here lies in the Greek word translated as "rebuked" (epitimao). It seems strange to speak to inanimate wind and waves this way. Epitimao denotes a sharp, biting, and authoritative charge—a curt berating meant to silence an opponent.

 

Notice where else this exact word appears:

 

• Mark 1:25: When confronting a demonized man in the Capernaum synagogue, "‘Be quiet!’ said Jesus sternly [epitimao]. ‘Come out of him!’"

 

• Matthew 17:18: When delivering a suffering boy, "Jesus rebuked [epitimao] the demon, and it came out..."

 

Jesus did not coddle dark forces; He broke them with a word of absolute command. When He leveled that same epitimao against the screaming winds of Galilee, the reaction was instant and unnatural.

 

Having spent years of my life at sea, I can tell you that when a gale dies naturally, the water remains violent for hours. The swell rolls on long after the wind dissipates. But at Christ’s word, the sea went flat in a second. The veteran fishermen aboard had never seen anything like it.

 

⏸️ Pause Point 1: Small-Group Discussion

 

What emotional or spiritual storm is threatening to swamp your boat right now? When you look at Jesus "sleeping" in the middle of your crisis, do you find yourself crying out in fear or in faith?

 

The Lord's gentle reprimand—"Where is your faith?"—reminds us that He had already given them the destination: "Let us go over to the other side." He never promised an easy cruise, but He did promise they wouldn’t go under. The way of Jesus is rarely an escape from the storm, but a triumphant passage through it.

 

2. The Battle for Gerasa: Confronting the Darkness

 

²⁶ They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee. ²⁷ When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs (Luke 8:26-27 (NIV).

 

It becomes clear now why the storm raged so fiercely on the journey over: it was a cosmic border skirmish. A high-ranking spiritual stronghold controlled the eastern shores, and the enemy was desperate to stop the advance of God’s Kingdom.

 

Early in my Christian walk, I met a man named Brian who had foolishly dabbled in spiritualist séances. What began as curiosity quickly turned into a living nightmare as demonic entities began physically manifesting in his home, terrifying his family. In desperation, he fled toward the home of a local minister, Harry Hughes. As he walked, Brian could audibly hear evil spirits threatening to slaughter his family if he knocked on Harry’s door. He knocked anyway. He surrendered his life to Jesus Christ that night. Harry prayed over his home, and every dark influence was broken. Brian went on to serve the Lord faithfully for decades and never had another problem with dark spirits.

 

We must understand that our world is not a neutral vacation spot; it is a battleground. C.S. Lewis captured this reality perfectly in The Screwtape Letters:

 

"There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight."

 

We cannot afford to act like we are on a luxury cruise liner when we are stationed on a battleship. We are instructed to leave no foothold for the enemy (Ephesians 4:27), recognizing that our real battle is fought in the unseen realms. Paul the Apostle wrote:

 

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Ephesians 6:12 (NIV). 

 

3. From Broken Chains to Sitting at Jesus' Feet

 

²⁸ When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!” ²⁹ For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places. ³⁰ Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. ³¹ And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss (Luke 8:28-31). 

 

Look closely at the tragic portrait of this man. Mark’s Gospel notes that night and day among the tombs, he would scream out and cut himself with sharp stones (Mark 5:5). He lived in a state of absolute, unceasing mental and spiritual agony.

 

The enemy’s playbook has not changed. Satan delights in driving people toward self-destruction, whispering deceptive thoughts into vulnerable minds until they mistake his accusing voice for their own internal dialogue. He isolates us, strips us of our dignity, and drives us into lonely, barren places.

 

Yet despite hosting a "Legion"—a term referring to a Roman military unit of up to 6,000 soldiers—this man still retained enough volition to run. When he spotted Jesus stepping off the boat, he broke into a run and collapsed at His feet.

 

No one is ever too far gone. No life is so deeply entrenched in darkness, addiction, or spiritual bondage that it cannot find immediate deliverance at the feet of Jesus.

 

⏸️ Pause Point 2: The Nature of Our Strongholds

 

Small Group Reflection

 

We often see strongholds start as a simple footprint in our lives, then turn into a knee-hold, and eventually harden into an entrenched habit. Where have you allowed the enemy a foothold in your thought life or habits?

 

The townsfolk tried to contain the man with physical chains, but only Christ could handle the spiritual root. In what ways do we try to use "human chains" (self-help, willpower, hiding our issues) to control problems that actually need divine deliverance?

 

The entities inside the man recognized their Sovereign Judge immediately. They begged not to be cast into the Abyss—the non-physical cosmic prison house of darkness reserved for fallen spirits (Revelation 20:1-3, 2 Peter 2:4).

 

³² A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. ³³ When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned... ³⁵ and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid (Luke 8:32-35).

 

Jesus granted their departure into a herd of 2,000 swine. This dramatic visual served as an undeniable, physical receipt of deliverance for the healed man, ensuring he knew the tormentors were truly gone. Tragically, the local townsfolk cared more about the financial loss of their livestock than the miraculous restoration of a human soul, begging Jesus to leave their region.

 

But look at the beautiful transformation: the naked, violent, screaming outcast is now sitting at the feet of Jesus, fully clothed, and in his right mind.

 

When the man begged to join the boat crew, Jesus handed him a different assignment: "Return home and tell how much God has done for you." He became the first missionary to the Decapolis (the ten Gentile cities), breaking up the hard soil of that region so that, when Jesus returned there (Mark 7:31), a massive revival broke out.

 

4. Spiritual Warfare Victory: 5 Truths for Believers

 

To walk out this victory in your daily life, anchor your heart to these five scriptural principles:

 

• Greater is He: If you belong to Christ, you hold delegated authority over the kingdom of darkness. You do not fight for victory; you fight from victory. ("The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world." — 1 John 4:4)

 

• Submit and Resist: Deliverance begins with absolute surrender to God. ("Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." — James 4:7)

 

• Cleanse Your Space: Do not allow objects, media, or symbols tied to occultic or dark practices to remain in your home. The enemy looks for legal ground; close the door entirely.

 

• Renounce the Past: Bring past involvements with darkness into the light. Verbally confess them, ask for God's cleansing fire, and explicitly declare that you belong solely to Jesus Christ.

 

• Stand with the Body: Never wage war in isolation. Jesus sent His disciples out in pairs because spiritual strongholds are broken through corporate, unified prayer.

 

🫀 Heart Application

 

This week, do not let this remain head knowledge. Take these three intentional steps to apply this text to your heart:

 

1. Audit the Footholds: Spend 15 minutes in silent prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal any "footholds" in your life—unforgiveness, hidden habits, or dark entertainment. Write them down, confess them, and physically cross them out as a sign of Christ’s complete ownership over you.

 

2. Speak to the Storm: Identify the primary anxiety or "squall" threatening to overwhelm you this week. Intentionally open your Bible to Luke 8, read Christ's command over the waves out loud, and verbally surrender that specific worry to His sovereign care.

 

3. Share Your Deliverance: Think of one person in your circle who is currently walking through an emotional or spiritual wilderness. Reach out to them this week and simply share a 2-minute testimony of "how much God has done for you" in your past.
